News / Politics / Activism Media continues to lie.
After the shooting at the Toronto festival, multiple media outlets have reported that the Toronto Police Chief has called for “gun control” and “tougher gun laws” in response to what happened.
However, the reports are highly misleading and inaccurate.
He actually called for tougher sentencing for those who commit firearms offences, especially in crowds.
He said: “We need some reforms that address that and recognize that if you pull out a gun in a public space, in a public square or the Eaton Centre or any other public gathering and fire it indiscriminately, that should be treated with the utmost seriousness in the law.”
This is just one of many examples that prove how biased the media is. Everyone knows that “gun control” refers to laws restricting the acquisition, transfer and possession of firearms, not tougher sentences for things that are already illegal, everywhere.
Make no mistake, the media is not on our side.

Lets ban em allllllll and see if this shit stops

u/sorean_4 Jul 17 '26
Handguns purchases have been banned for few years now. Nothing changed, criminals are still criminals and don’t take laws seriously
1
u/wireditfellow bc Jul 19 '26
Well if your laws are so relax that they feel like bad jokes. Why should criminals take them seriously.
2
u/sorean_4 Jul 22 '26
The laws are not relaxed. Tell me a country where criminals adhere to the laws and don’t break them. Wait….
-15
u/SandySpectre Jul 17 '26
It’s not the purchase that’s been banned but the transfer. You can buy as many handguns as you want but you can’t get the transfer into your name. It’s a nit picky differentiation but when we talk about this stuff those detail matter.
10
u/Lumindan Jul 17 '26
It’s not the purchase that’s been banned but the transfer. You can buy as many handguns as you want but you can’t get the transfer into your name
Except that's basically not the case since no one will sell to you without an exemption.
It’s a nit picky differentiation but when we talk about this stuff those detail matter.
The details do matter, the way you're framing makes it sound like joe smith can go to Cabela's and get one.
6
u/99spider Jul 18 '26
No, this "detail" actually doesn't matter. It matters just as much as saying I can "buy" a machine gun or any of the OIC banned firearms from an appropriately licensed business, despite never being able to get it transferred to me.
1
u/sorean_4 Jul 22 '26
You can’t buy handguns period. If a weapon can’t be transferred to you it can’t be purchased. The only exception is .22 handguns for Olympic shooting for RPAL holders.

Lmfao ur totally right, they have it ass backwards and they are focused on the wrong thing here, they think banning all these legal guns is going to stop the issues canada has with crime,if anything i feel like "crime"will go up because ppl will just say screw it and start selling there NR'S on the street for tripple what they paid
5
u/KaeseKraimer Jul 17 '26
Just revert to the firearms act - and put Ontario gun owners under OPP supervision. Keep it away from Feds. Lets get back to common sense

1
u/BrightOrdinary4348 Jul 18 '26
Poly would absolutely jump on this. An 8 year ban would shutter all firearms related businesses. After 8 years, it would be impossible to restart the sport. Poly isn’t interested in public safety; they don’t want you to have fun with something that has been used in tragic events. By that metric, their goals would be accomplished.
I propose an amendment where not only are gun laws returned to their pre-2020 levels, but the government creates a program for another 8 years that heavily subsidizes (80%) startup costs for entrepreneurs who want to open ranges and gun shops. Also, all PALs/RPALs will continue to be renewed during the prohibition.

u/thingk89 Jul 18 '26
I’ve been saying that about cars for years… I mean, what if all the pollution goes away? We’ll be glad we banned them !
76
u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jul 17 '26
Didn't the TPS (and many other police agencies, for that matter) explicitly state that legal, law-abiding gun owners were never the problem, and the "legal reforms" they were asking for are tougher penalties against criminals and bail reform?

Even Olivia Chow was nodding when the Chief said that (not saying I trust her, but optics-wise she did agree to what was being said). This news reporting is infuriating.
29
u/Reelair Jul 17 '26
Yes, I've been following this shooting closely. Both progressive mayor, Chow, and the police chief are specifically calling out illegal, American guns.
I'm hoping this starts tipping the scales towards logic based gun control.

u/Hopeful_Relation_441 Jul 18 '26
perhaps... carney is chipping away at the cons by appointing them as senators ... hopefully he will have to listen to the minister of gophers less
18
u/Florida_Man42069 Jul 17 '26
Yes they did, yet the media is reporting the exact opposite.
12
u/commutinator Jul 17 '26
How do we go about forcing them to print a retraction?
12
u/Lumindan Jul 17 '26
There's a correction button you can hit to report it to them but it's clear they posted this with an agenda in mind
15
u/SecureNarwhal Jul 17 '26
Stats Canada has also suddenly been making reports saying legal guns are being used commonly in crimes (all their reports previously have shown that illegal guns are used predominantly in crimes).
There's some big narrative twist happening here.
3
u/Lumindan Jul 17 '26
Stats Canada has also suddenly been making reports saying legal guns are being used commonly in crimes
Was it stats can? I thought it was an rcmp report that excluded Ontario and Quebec (and global ran hard with it)
9
u/Acceptable_Visit_115 Jul 18 '26
Yeah it was a RCMP report for their own jurisdictions, which excludes ON/QC as they have their own provincial police.
...which in turn excludes most of the illegal handguns that are in Toronto and such.
1
u/SecureNarwhal Jul 17 '26
oh maybe, I never bookmarked the page but i recall the RCMP report then followed by something from stats can.. but it's the weekend and i don't feel like looking it up 😅
1
u/CenturionV Jul 22 '26
They know those government lawyers need something to take to the Supreme Court case so they are manufacturing "evidence"
1
u/gnu_gai Jul 17 '26
Or it could be that this reporting period is an outlier in which more legally purchased guns were used. They're still reporting that 80% of people charged with firearm homicide did not have the required liscence for their weapon, for example
38
u/Cock_ball_dickin Jul 17 '26
They genuinely should be sued over this like what the fuck
9
u/Blood-Wolfe Jul 17 '26
Absolutely! I've been saying for years that this kind of blatant lying from the media should be illegal and subject to criminal charges and massive fines and jail time for those complicit in the bias bullshit lies.
11
u/Cock_ball_dickin Jul 17 '26
I’d settle for just a civil suit lol. Because tbh, at the end of the day it really is just full circle, punishing people for “disinformation” which tbh, slippery slope. But fuck these guys, I wish a class action lawsuit was possible over this
11
u/Ok-Raise-5115 Jul 18 '26
I mean essentially what they’re doing is libel, defaming law abiding gun owners over the actions of criminals
7
u/Cock_ball_dickin Jul 18 '26
That is true, I just unfortunately don’t see a world where the courts also see it that way

They'd have to pull their hands away long enough from fellating the State to write a response. 0 chance they do that.
4
u/Blood-Wolfe Jul 17 '26
Sadly it doesn't help. I've done that for years.
4

17
u/bacon-wiz Jul 17 '26
Such a misleading title. Anyone who watched this press conference can tell you he said what the government is doing to legal firearms owners won’t make a difference. It’s all illegal guns from the USA
13
u/Kooky-Hamster4071 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
Poly and the media know that banning more guns isn't going to reduce crime, but that's not why they're doing it. They're doing it to punish the people who they blame for what happened at polytechnic all those years ago.
And none of us had anything to do with that.
3
u/CenturionV Jul 22 '26
They just hate firearms in general, in addition to what happened. They think firearms are rural, firearms are American, Firearms are for people who enjoy their freedoms and are ok with the inherent risk in that, firearms are used to hunt and kill animals for food. All of these things offend the progressive liberal mind.
1
u/MostEpicRedditor Jul 24 '26
My opinion of course, but they probably are pushing it because ultimately they want the state to retain the monopoly on violence.
They want it because the state also wants it, and is willing to pay them handsomely to leverage their past to push a narrative that if you or I were to oppose, then we'd be labeled as monsters for doing so.
Unfortunately, this strategy is still overall working in their favor, but it is also not too late to expose their bald-faced lies and halt it in its tracks; even if it is indeed too late, we still have alternatives.
2
u/Blood-Wolfe Jul 17 '26
Yep, they fucking psychotic nut jobs and once I felt sorry for them but now I wish they didn't survive.
This is also the first steps towards comm*nism and dictators running things is by disarming the civilian population.
0
u/thickdorsalvein Jul 18 '26
Disgusting thing to post
6
u/Blood-Wolfe Jul 18 '26
If you say so. I lost all pity for them when they went on this psychotic crusade against law abiding citizens for no reason and that will do NOTHING to solve gun crime in any sort of way at all. Add the fact they constantly post lies and misinformation to try and fool the public and they have never used facts or statistics and ignore everything presented to them that goes against their agenda even though facts and statistics can't be argued they just ignore it all and lie lie lie to slander and defame law abiding firearm owners.
So why should I feel sorry for them now as opposed to feeling anger and frustration? They brought this on themselves with this foolish and misguided crusade against law abiding citizens. We had nothing to do with that tragic incident, yet we're being dragged through the mud and our freedoms being stripped away, all based on lies and their hatred towards us when we literally did nothing wrong.
0
u/thickdorsalvein Jul 18 '26
My man there is a difference between not feeling sorry for them or disagreeing with them and wishing them murdered, sincerely please seek help 🙏
3
u/Blood-Wolfe Jul 18 '26
I have no need to seek help, Provost and her fellow nut jobs are the ones that need to seek help. I'm not calling for them to be murdered, because your comment makes it sound as if I want to see them murdered now, which is NOT what I said and not what I would condone.
12
u/yuikkiuy bc Jul 17 '26
Police chief: gun control is not the problem, we need to punish the criminals! All the crime guns are smuggled from the USA!
Media:Police chief supports stronger gun control, #banallgunsorsomething

u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl Jul 17 '26
Don't know if City News allows for it but it's often worthwhile to report these headline errors where you can.
12
u/GoGetInvolved Jul 17 '26
You can also complain to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council and National NewsMedia Council if it doesn't go anywhere with the editors.
6
u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl Jul 17 '26
Good to know. I've never gotten to that stage but it's good to know where to escalate.
10
u/Geralt-of-Rivai Jul 17 '26
He said the exact opposite of what the title in the article is suggesting lol. He was basically calling for better border control of illegal guns, nothing about gun control from an ownership perspective
8
u/Feeling-Water-6824 Jul 17 '26
He actually stated that this wasnt legal gun owners. He went on to say that over 90% of guns recovered are smuggled from the US. He wants tougher laws on those individuals that pull a firearm out in public.
4
5
u/Crossbones06 Jul 17 '26
This headline is total bullshit. The police chief explicitly said in the press conference that gun crimes are not being committed by legal gun owners “in any meaningful way”. He also clearly states that people committing crimes with guns are a) criminals who obtained them illegally, not legal gun owners, and b) when the guns can be traced 90% of the time they can be traced to the US. Fucking totally misleading headlines.
5
u/Florida_Man42069 Jul 17 '26
It not just misleading, it’s a straight up lie.
Get used to it. This is what Canada is now. The media can lie to you as long as it supports liberal policies
4
u/GinnAdvent Jul 17 '26
We still have post about the video of him saying legal gun owners are not the problem, even with direct source on the Youtube?
I mean City news gotta be bonkers to have this level of misinformation.
I hope any of the Conservative MP will call medias out on this.
3
u/System-Jacker Jul 17 '26
Wow now that is ridiculous, that is literally the exact opposite of what he said!
5
u/FunkyFrunkle Jul 17 '26
City News, Global and CTV are some of the worst offenders for shit like this. I don’t read any of their articles.
4
u/Natural_Comparison21 Jul 18 '26
They somehow just like bluntly outright lie. Not even the CBC does that. CBC lies by omission.
10
u/gnu_gai Jul 17 '26
The media aren't on our side, but frankly from all I've seen neither are TPS
11
u/NIBLZ_HAMSTR Jul 17 '26
I heard that virtually all of the police services are against the gun grab. This is the first time ive heard of the police chiming in to say more fun bans will fix anything.
6
u/throwaway11100217 Jul 17 '26
Just ban news already lol. If we can't report honestly without bias then there's no point in having any news outlets as we're about as accurate as town rumours in our current state.
7
u/Metalock Jul 17 '26
Crazy to think how we can't share news links on Facebook/Instagram in this country, but mainstream media is allowed to explicitly bald-faced lie like this lol
5
u/throwaway11100217 Jul 17 '26
Liberal policy is like physics in Grade 10 where you ignore air resistance and other factors that must be accounted for in the real world.
3
u/Whispersfine Jul 17 '26
Ban didn’t work because we didn’t ban harder. This is the bullshit logic of the gun control freaks. They know they can never actually eliminate the possibility of tragedy, so they put on a show to ease the mind of people by punishing the small group of law abiding citizens.
Disgusting

Not only did he state that "the vast amount of firearms used in crimes come in illegally from the US", he then doubled down and said that legal firearms owners are NOT the problem (IN THIS ACTUAL GD INTERVIEW). To finish, he said unequivocally that his police force will NOT be coming door to door and confiscating firearms from permit-holding, legal firearms owners. This cannot be further from the truth. Makes me sick TBH

u/HappyCan7250 Jul 21 '26
Im pretty sure pulling out a gun in a public setting is already illegal... what we actually need is a government and judges who do their damn job and protect the public.
Wasn't the guy out on bail for manslaughter, if I recall correctly, AND wanted in the US for arms trafficking? Yet some bleeding heart judge decided "oh yes, this fellow NEEDS to be free and in the public! What a great benefit to society he is!"
Its about time judges start getting charged for negligent death when they release repeat violent offenders who then go on to murder some innocent victim. Its actually despicable what our judges do. Something like 50% of the murders in Canada, are committed by people OUT ON BAIL!
So, no media, what we DONT need is more laws, what we NEED is to get rid of activist bleeding heart judges and prosecutors who are genuinely endangering and harming the public day after day. Its actually disgusting that this is even allowed to go on in this country. We should be building HUGE prisons and anyone with multiple violent convictions gets thrown into one, and the key thrown away for a few decades, like a 3 strikes law for violent offenses. Make them work too, so it's not just a free ride for them on the taxpayer dime. Sick of this bullshit where EVERY tragedy is followed up by "suspect was known to police" and "suspect was out on bail". These judges are borderline treasonous.
