News / Politics / Activism Former Manitoba MP charged with gun offences, 439 firearms and antique cannon seized
Firearms seen in this undated photo were part of a firearm trafficking investigation where a 78-year-old man was arrested in Dauphin,
Man., on July 7, 2026. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Handout - RCMP (Mandatory Credit)
Mounties say a former Manitoba member of Parliament is facing several gun offences after 439 firearms were seized from a home in Dauphin, Man.
Inky Mark, 78, faces a dozen charges, including firearms trafficking.
Police say they began investigating in March after another man from Dauphin, who is 73, was charged with firearms offences in the U.S.
Search warrants were executed last week at the Manitoba home, where officers also seized an antique cannon and $300,000 in cash.
Mark was elected under the Reform Party in Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette in 1997 and didn't seek re-election as a Conservative MP in 2010.
He has been released from custody.

They mentioned trafficking, so I bet that's what got him on the radar
55
u/kefefs_v2 11d ago edited 11d ago
Yeah, especially since it says he's facing US charges as well.I misread the article. Mark isn't facing US charges, it seems another local man is. That local man was tracked after a handgun was stolen from a US gun show, and he led the cops to Mark, who bought illegal guns from him.
9
u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 11d ago
But what did he do in the US? Did he try to import a couple of parts and get flagged for ITAR violations? That would constitute trafficking.
15
u/kefefs_v2 11d ago
Looks like I misread the article, it's not the ex-MP who's charged in the US too. Seems Mark bought stolen/smuggled guns and possibly other "prohibited devices" from another local man accused of stealing a handgun from a US gun show and smuggling it and other guns into Canada.
1
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
There is nothing in the article that confirms the firearms Inky bought were smuggled.
You don't have a reference number from the CFP for those three shotguns you bought? That's trafficking...
1
u/kefefs_v2 10d ago
It's in other articles, like the BBC one.
0
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
No, I don't think so.
Here is the article.
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crr8gggwe8zo
Nothing says Inky Mark got caught with firearms that had been smuggled from the USA.
If I'm wrong, please show me where.
2
u/kefefs_v2 10d ago
That investigation led RCMP to find and seize firearms allegedly purchased by Mark, which police said were "never lawfully transferred".
At least three firearms are believed to have been illegally trafficked and one firearm had its serial number tampered with, officials said. They also found more than C$300,000 (£158,000) in cash at the home.
-1
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
Look at what trafficking in.
That doesn't have anything to do with "smuggled".
Any otherwise lawful transfer but without the new CFP transfer number requirement is "trafficking".
You are reading in things that are not there.
1
u/gspotcowboy 10d ago
Brother the literal definition of arms trafficking is "the illegal smuggling, distribution, or sale of weapons, ammunition, and munitions across international borders"
→ More replies (0)2
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
Inky just bought some guns from another guy - perhaps Inky didn't get a reference number.
Then this other guy got caught up with something and they had some records from the firearms registry, etc. "What happened with this or that" and Inky got fingered and now the police come to Inky's house and don't like some things he has going on there.
It really doesn't take much...
3
1
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
By "illegal guns" they probably mean they didn't get a reference number.
I am skeptical this is anything more than an attack by zealous police on an old man.
2
u/kefefs_v2 10d ago
Doesn't sound like it. At least three of the guns were stolen/smuggled and one had its serial removed.
-1
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
It doesn't say they were stolen or smuggled.
It says three firearms were "trafficked". If you don't get a reference number, that's trafficking.
Also, it is not clear that it was one of those three firearms that they think maybe the serial number was removed. That could have been any of the other 400+ firearms. Further, just because they think a serial number was intentionally removed doesn't make it so. It's not like they have done any lab work or had any expert examine it yet.
You are reading things into the article that are not there.
27
u/mwmwmwmwmmdw 11d ago
the "trafficking" in question sounds like he bough non-restricteds from a guy he didnt know where stolen and should have been more diligent on their origin when buying.
24
u/EnvironmentBright697 11d ago
How the hell is someone supposed to know if something was stolen or not?
33
u/mwmwmwmwmmdw 11d ago
if the buyer has a valid pal and doesnt raise any red flags during the sale there really isnt a way to know.
5
u/FriendZone_EndZone 11d ago
$300 000 in cash not suspicious?
14
u/mwmwmwmwmmdw 11d ago
he is also a bit of a kook from what ive heard. and im guessing doesnt like or trust banks possibly
1
u/Dependent_Account603 11d ago
Don't have to be a cook to not trust banks. Banks don't have bank run insurance for no reason.
4
u/sorean_4 11d ago
No. It’s not. It’s legal tender. How much you have in the house, it’s no one’s business. What suspicious about money? For some 10k might be a lot for some having a million in large bills is a small change.
2
u/AdministrationOk1083 11d ago
My parents have more than that in golf and silver, then close to that in cash
2
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
Not really. Lots of older guys have money.
I bet a lot of older farmers that have accumulated over a lifetime have similar amounts just in case they run into a land deal opportunity one evening.

Don't dig in a very specific spot in my yard if that is crazy. Some people don't trust banks.

300k isn’t that much
1
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
There is no law against that.
Lots of valid and sufficient reasons to have $300k in cash.
3
u/l3luntl3rigade 10d ago
Currently you're correct, but there's a bill making its way through the motions that the federal government is currently trying to make that against the law.
Christine with the Canadian Constitution Foundation on YouTube has a piece on it.
Basically the government wants you to have an itemized/receipted record of any amounts over $10,000, or it will be seized by police (until you can provide proof of ownership of every dollar there).
The government says its to "help them stop crime."
Attacks to freedom on all fronts in this country

u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
They didn't have to even be stolen or related to this trouble the other guy has with the USA.
If that other guy mentioned he sold some firearms recently to Inky and there is no CFP transfer number, that's trafficking.

Smuggling arms which one should be able to legally possess, but it arbitrarily restricted from doing so, into an oppressive state is pretty based actually.

There is no allegation that Inky Mark was involved with "smuggling".
An illegal transfer is "trafficking". So , all it takes is not getting a transfer number from the CFP.
Smuggling involves cross-border criminality.
From the BBC article:
That investigation led RCMP to find and seize firearms allegedly purchased by Mark, which police said were "never lawfully transferred".
3
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
They don't even allege that he was smuggling.

You laugh, but two old guys making an otherwise legal sale for firearms but they didn't get a transfer number - that's trafficking.
It takes very little.

I have several firearms with "tampered serial numbers", or I'm sure the RCMP would claim as much, even though they are milsurps where they had drilled through the serial number for scope mounts and other modifications long before serial numbers became standard in Canada.
3
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
Exactly.
The fact the police think there is an issue with it doesn't mean much. They get a lot wrong.
8
u/heavydutydan 11d ago
The mention of the cannon reminds me of that copy pasta that you see now and then. Ill try to find it and paste it here:
"I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. 'What the devil?' As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, 'Tally ho lads' the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended."
Sorry for the formatting, I'm on mobile and I had to find and copy/paste this. It always makes me laugh. Anyways, yeah...cannons.

I got a weird feeling it’s definitely more than that.
1
u/Beneficial-Ride-4475 11d ago edited 11d ago
It's possible. I'd really have to look at what guns to cull if we do have restrictions implemented, and that idea hurts me.

There's a Facebook group called save the CBC and a whole lot of people in the comments are really putting emphasis on the fact the guy was a Conservative politician. Hasn't been listed in politics since 2010.

u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
There is no evidence Inky Mark was involved with that.
Could be as simple as they made a recent deal on some unrelated firearms but didn't get a CFP transfer number.
20
u/Mapledeepstateagent 11d ago
Smuggling presumably
14
u/hunterofsteelhead 11d ago
Its wierd how they didnt focus so much on what he did wrong.
13
u/Mapledeepstateagent 11d ago
Not particularly. It’s pretty standard that the police will only release as much information for the media to report on as strictly necessary.
When a crown prosecutor is picked and court dates set you’ll probably find the specifics you’re looking for.
14
u/hunterofsteelhead 11d ago
Unless it suits their narrative like when they started the whole 2020 bans because of the NS shooting releasing information they werent supposed to during an ongoing investigation in order to cause fear in the public to support their bans
8
u/Scary-Detail-3206 11d ago
They conveniently forgot to release that the NS shooter was a RCMP informant on their payroll, oops!
7
u/hunterofsteelhead 11d ago
Im not sure if they proved he was an informant its just that he withdrew money in a way that was extremely suspicious and informant like. They also let him escape from their cordon and refused to alert the public he was dressed like an officer in a vehicle that looked like an officers car. He was on the phone during the shooting and nobody knows who he was speaking with

Its wrong to take the feds word on anything without seeing evidence and facts presented. They have a long dark history. Its not illegal to have 300k in cash and you dont need to assume where it came from.

u/hunterofsteelhead 10d ago
That investigation led RCMP to find and seize firearms allegedly purchased by Mark, which police said were "never lawfully transferred"

Do you know the difference between trafficking and smuggling?
In the most recent article, Inky says he didn't do the transfer properly.
If you don't get the new Bill C-21 CFP transfer number, then an otherwise lawful transfer is now "trafficking".

If they were trafficking firearms it sure makes us legal owners look bad. Dude was a former Conservative MP, so just gives the anti-gun folk more ammo to use on the population that just think guns = scary.
6
u/ManyArmedGod 11d ago
Was he a conservative MP?
“Mark was elected under the Reform Party in Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette in 1997 and didn't seek re-election as a Conservative MP in 2010.”
5
u/hunterofsteelhead 11d ago
Yes im just hesitant to believe the feds after all theyve done. Did he actually smuggle and traffic firearms or are they just stamping that onto something he did to paint him a villain?
1
u/CyberEd-ca 10d ago
Trafficking could be as simple as not getting a CFP transfer number in what was an otherwise lawful deal between two license holders.

u/mwmwmwmwmmdw 11d ago
he got slapped with charges that have been well discuessed on here as being catch all things they put on gun owners they don't like.
up until recently anyone involved in a self defence shooting with legal guns always got slapped with unsafe storage since you where technically unsafely storing said gun when you where using it to not die.
1
u/cubiclejail 11d ago
So you think that they charged a past Member of Parliament with a slew of bogus charges because they don't like him? Riiiiiiiight.
Also, nobody brought up self-defence shootings. The article lists multiple allegations that have nothing to do with using a firearm in self-defence. 🙄

Do you own firearms or are you just trolling through?
Haven't seen anyone alleging that Conservatives are more law abiding but Canadian gun owners certainly are, on average.
How about we let the guy have his day in court first before you and the rest of Poly try to use this to show how the problem is firearms owners and not career criminals?
2
u/GinnAdvent 11d ago
Nah, we got bunch of 4 months accounts posting random stuff here just to get people riled up.
Another guy was saying if the firearm he turned in for the confiscation program need to include the magazine...
I am sure they include those in the instructions, or a quick call to the program hot line would answer the question. But nope, gotta ask people in a gun sub that totally against gun confiscation.
So how many law abiding Liberals out there that aren't landlords and taking advantage of the current house price to jack up the rent and trying to keep up the property value eh? Perhaps we should ask Gregor Robertson?
How many law abiding drivers out there that dont exceed the speed limit and ran red lights? I am sure the number of infractions giving to firearm owners are way less than driving license holders annually.
0
u/BearlyDraconic01 11d ago edited 11d ago
I am indeed a licensed gun owner, and am aware that we are statistically much less likely to commit crimes. I was not criticizing him for being a gun owner (except for the trafficking and illegal ones).
I just think it's funny that a member of a party that likes to champion "law and order" was not living up to their stated values. I'm sure this is only a one-off though, and there are no other corrupt hypocrites and/or criminals within the ranks of the CPC.
But what do I know? I'm one of what seems to be very few Canadian gun owners on this sub that does not reflexively vote conservative for the single issue of guns while their policy plans in every other area would be even worse than Carney's.
2
u/jwubadubdub 10d ago
"But what do I know?"
Very little it seems.
Inky Mark spent his parliamentary career with Canada's conservative movement, serving as a Reform, Canadian Alliance, Progressive Conservative, and later Conservative MP. However, he became increasingly critical of Stephen Harper's leadership, left the Conservative caucus after accusing it of becoming overly centralized, and later joined the Green Party before running as an independent in the 2015 federal election.
He hasn't been associated with cons for over a decade. He has however been very vocal against the CCP and their outsized influence on CDN politics.

u/NeruLight 10d ago
