Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Question about the Supreme Court case. Can the LPC not just ram through an actual legislation with their majority gov in order to kill the case?

Yes, they will likely do this if they lose their case.

If you don’t think they will, look at the way they’ve fought the Emergencies Act case, they’ve lost at every court level but they’ve now appealed it to the SCC. They refuse to admit their actions were wrong, and they’ll never admit their gun control efforts are wrong either, they’ll just rewrite the rules.

I don’t think they’ll do it right away, they’ll save it for the election “thinks time we’ll get it right, a newly elected LPC will get rid of assault weapons and gun crime for good, we need another majority….again” it’ll be the 5th time they can run on it. JT literally campaigned on his own pathetic buyback.

I could see them just overhaul the laws to feature ban and make all semi-auto, detachable magazine fed centrefires illegal period. They could then say you can keep your sks but it becomes prohibited the second you put a detachable magazine in it, better return that bubba to stock, can keep your garand too. This would also ban any new additions (makasi, carmel, backland, homesteader, turkish semi's) past, present or future and keeping all the currently banned rifles banned in one fell swoop. If they don't want to deal with a buyback just grandfather the old ones into prohibited without use, safe queens for eternity or until you die and no one can legally inherit them.

No buyback means you can't complain your property was unfairly confiscated, so there wouldn't be any future court cases to worry about. Falls in line with their recent comments about looking into "classification" changes. You know the changes won't be to allow MORE firearms I can tell you that. Trying to whack-a-mole all the tactical guns by name was a fools errand to begin with, when they could have just done extreme feature bans thay would have been way more effective at their goal.
