Feets / Collection / My build Ruger Scout Gen II
Picked up a Gen II Ruger Scout in 308 today. Not nearly as solid or pretty as my Gunsite Scout, but I'll put a Burris Scout scope on it and see how it shoots this weekend. Also, anyone know what the little black knurled thing that came in the box is?

What’s the difference between the scout and the gunsite scout?

Gunsite scout has been discontinued. This is the replacement. Definitely not the same quality fit and finish, regardless its a nice product with great features. I love guns with standard iron sights which is a rare feature these days.

The Gunsite Scout was based on the Ruger M77 action, which is a pretty high quality controlled-round-feed Mauser-style action. The American Scout is based on the Ruger American action, which is a much cheaper (in terms of design complexity, tolerance, and finish) push-feed action. Not all push-feed actions are bad, but CRF actions are typically higher quality. The American Scout also comes in a cheaper polymer stock.
Essentially, the American Scout reflects Ruger's pivot toward even more budget-oriented designs and less of the expensive options. The American has always been a good value proposition, but it's never been a great gun. The M77 was better in most ways, but was more expensive to produce and probably had lower profit margins, and Ruger seems to want to trim back their product lineup and offer something they can sell easier. They probably decided that keeping both guns in production would constitute competing with themselves, and dropped the Gunsite in favour of the American.

Gun sight scour was based on m77 action and had controlled round feed it was a superior firearm

Looks like a tool to adjust the front post. Congrats with the new scout! I have a Ruger Gunsite and a Steyr, was thinking about this one but not sure how it compares to the other two.

Thanks! That's exactly what is is. The Steyr is on my "eventually" list. Came across this one unexpectedly so had to pick it up first.

Saw one in person and it was surprisingly light weight. Tons of space around the barrel (free float). Quality seemed good and bolt was pretty smooth. If I were to get a new 308 this would be in my top.

I really want this in 5.56, but might take forever to reach Canadian shelves unfortunately

Got my hands on one of these today and almost bought it, the action is definitely not premium quality but for the price, with all features included especially the integrated iron sights it does strike me as a great bush gun/ranch style. Decided to go with a Tikka instead. Everything about the tikka was far superior and it was only a few hundred more.

I actually went with the t3x varmint stainless in 6.5, completely different style of gun but I wanted more range capability down the road. The scout would likely max at like 300 accurately

Ruger messed up when they went cheap .. their Gen 1 is amazing

Yeah, it’s hard to beat the gen 1s. The action is superior and the laminated stocks are gorgeous. Only saving grace is that by all accounts they still put money into the barrels on the gen 2s. Hopefully I’ll confirm that this weekend when I get it out to shoot.

I really like the look of these rifles. I've owned 2 Gen 2s, a Ranch 5.56 and a Predator 308, and neither shot very good sadly. Maybe I just got duds as many guys swear by them. Ended up selling both in the end.
Not a huge fan of the spiral fluting on them as it just introduces potential for warping under heat. I like that they did away with it on the Scout models. I much prefer a solid medium to heavy profile over spiral fluting. I think the Scouts look great and probably keep better POI consistency without having the fluting.

Nice to see them trickling into Canada. I have seen 1 place that had some 556 in stock as well. At the $1200 price point they cannot be compared to the m77 scout which were almost double that price.

I'm curious to hear how she groups for you after the first range day. The tool is for adjusting elevation on an AR style front sight post. The prongs depress a spring loaded plunger below the 4 cut outs along the edges of the front sight post. This allows you to adjust the height by threading it up vs down in 1/4 turn increments. The beauty of AR front sights is you can swap them out for different shapes/size if desired to achieve a more precise or quicker to acquire aiming point.
