Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I sure am glad I sold my SKS on gunpost a couple of days ago. Mighty convenient I got rid of it just before a shooting was committed with one. Mighty convenient.

You did the license verification right? And the buyer totally didn’t back out last minute right?

It was a handshake deal off of Gunpost, let me look at his PAL and his drivers license to confirm. He totally definitely did buy it and is in fact really a real person who exists in reality!

You didn’t do it legally then. You have to verify the license using the RCMP verification code.

Responded to a different guy but I learned my mistake and corrected it with this very real human. If you know the answer to this, if someone buys a gun but the seller didn’t run it through the verification site, is the buyer in any sort of legal trouble?

I want to say no but I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. It’s on the seller to do the license verification not the buyer.

Perfect, thanks. Don’t worry, I’ll do some double checking to make sure. Don’t want you to worry about my dumb ass trying to pass off your advice as fact.

I always see the guys here talking about “boating accidents” so I figured I’d give a shot at it. As dumb as I might be I do legitimately try to be as aware of the laws as possible. I’m a hick hillbilly, not a criminal (yet at least).

Keep this in mind. It’s not like the long gun registry where you are transferring a guns registration to someone. It’s you are verifying if their license is good. Legally speaking you don’t have to sell them anything after you verified. In theory you could verify 1,000 peoples licenses in the same day and any of those 1,000 people you could legally sell a gun to. Some call it a back door registry but it’s way to much of a pain for that to work. The only people who keep a record are stores.

Oh I see, that’s very interesting to learn. I guess it does make sense, I just never really thought of it.

Of course, a few years ago I didn’t think I would have to worry about becoming a criminal overnight because I own a 75 year old barely functioning Soviet battle rifle. And yet here we are.
