Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I sure am glad I sold my SKS on gunpost a couple of days ago. Mighty convenient I got rid of it just before a shooting was committed with one. Mighty convenient.

You did the license verification right? And the buyer totally didn’t back out last minute right?

It was a handshake deal off of Gunpost, let me look at his PAL and his drivers license to confirm. He totally definitely did buy it and is in fact really a real person who exists in reality!

I love the story you're presenting:

"I don't still legally have this gun, i illegally sold it"

Edit: a good hypothetical example of why you shouldn't talk to cops.

And that poor guy in mtl is another practice example of why you should stay away from cops.

Genuine question, whenever I’ve been to those Legion Hall gun shows, not a soul there does the whole online verification thing, (mainly because most of those guys are like 80) and often I have to remind them to even check my PAL.

So you have explained to me it’s illegal to not run the license through RCMP, are these gun shows basically just rampant with technical crime? Is it a crime that isn’t as strictly enforced or are these old dudes just constantly getting by on blind luck?

Oh and btw, I messaged this totally real guy back explaining my mistake, and he returned the rifle to me and I gave him his money back, but oh darn he cut the receiver up and welded the barrel shut. looks like it will never fire again. Just a hunk of wood and steel now

Those people who are 80 years old probably are just to stubborn to learn how to use a computer. That or they are of the mindset that “I’m old what’s going to happen to me?” However it’s more likely the former where they just don’t know any better. Old people are built different man. I had one older woman call a firearms license a FAC to my face and when I corrected her by calling it a PAL she stared at me for a second then called it a FAC again. Old people just be like that sometimes.

Oh yeah the FAC thing Jesus lol I remember an older guy who worked at Canadian Tire refused to sell me ammunition because I didn’t have a “FAC”. I had a PAL. After I spoke to someone else about it, they ALSO turned me down because I had the new white license and not the old purple one.

I just drove the hour to Canada Pro instead of trying to explain it for a 3rd time

Yea people are very unwilling to learn and change. It would be funny if it was not so sad.

The rule is new (as of 2022 if i remember correctly). You can do it over the phone too (which some might be doing). The generated reference number is good for 90 days, so repeat sales in that time period would be covered.

But I'd guess some people just don't know (or care) about the new law and that the police aren't there to see it happen.

It’s way to difficult and time consuming to enforce. Like the cops in Canada are apparently pretty stretched thin so they can’t just do a random audit of a PAL holder unless they have a meaningful reason from my understanding.

You didn’t do it legally then. You have to verify the license using the RCMP verification code.

Responded to a different guy but I learned my mistake and corrected it with this very real human. If you know the answer to this, if someone buys a gun but the seller didn’t run it through the verification site, is the buyer in any sort of legal trouble?

u/Natural_Comparison21 Jun 23 '26

I want to say no but I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. It’s on the seller to do the license verification not the buyer.

Perfect, thanks. Don’t worry, I’ll do some double checking to make sure. Don’t want you to worry about my dumb ass trying to pass off your advice as fact.

I always see the guys here talking about “boating accidents” so I figured I’d give a shot at it. As dumb as I might be I do legitimately try to be as aware of the laws as possible. I’m a hick hillbilly, not a criminal (yet at least).

Keep this in mind. It’s not like the long gun registry where you are transferring a guns registration to someone. It’s you are verifying if their license is good. Legally speaking you don’t have to sell them anything after you verified. In theory you could verify 1,000 peoples licenses in the same day and any of those 1,000 people you could legally sell a gun to. Some call it a back door registry but it’s way to much of a pain for that to work. The only people who keep a record are stores.

Oh I see, that’s very interesting to learn. I guess it does make sense, I just never really thought of it.

Of course, a few years ago I didn’t think I would have to worry about becoming a criminal overnight because I own a 75 year old barely functioning Soviet battle rifle. And yet here we are.

Don't think so. When I inherited two of my non-restricted rifles, my family member never had a license. We did the formality of calling it in and doing the paperwork, but I was told that I could just take them since they were non restricted.

The license check appears to be for the seller's protection.
