Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

It’s truly remarkable how they don’t listen to themselves and see how moronic they sound. It’s been 10 years, 4 bans and $2 billion dollars spent and yet we still have shootings. We still have cops getting killed and their only answer is the same stupid policies that aren’t preventing anything.

We’re a clown country run by clown politicians, 🤦🏽

At this point it felt like empty words. Their was no substance behind it apart from maybe calls for municipalities to have more controls over firearms policy? Which idk how that would have stopped this shooting as the perp was not even in the same province.

As if the handgun ban stopped the killings of the Ontario officers… fucking Montreal and Quebec in general.

I saw the video and it's the most word salad shit imaginable. The most flattering translation of what she said I could mange to scrape together was something along the lines of.

"We need to respect hunters and ingenious people but also have to get a control on guns in cities like Montreal." Which is like... How fucking clueless can you be? This person came from you guessed it... Alberta. So how do you control somebody's access to guns from Alberta when you only control Quebec? Like the argument she might be presenting is for more controls at a provincial or municipal level which nobody wants to see happen. Even the federal government has pretty much stated they don't want to do fucking municipal individual laws and shit. It felt like such a vague nothing burger that it felt like she was just saying empty words to please a voting base.

As I said in the main Canada sub. What the mayor is suggesting with this comment, is in effect, saying there is a need for provincial licensing and restricting and monitoring gun owner's movements. What, are we going to prohibit gun owners from entering other provinces now? Post guards and inspectors at provincial borders? Because that's what it would theoretically take to stop a copycat event.

Yep. The shooter didn’t come from even in the same province. They came from out of province. So they would essentially have to do provincial border security which would cost a arm and a leg and do very little at stopping crime. I don’t even think the liberals would want to touch that or many provinces.

To me it's a mental health failing rather than a gun control one.

It also kind of shows how silly the questions are on the PAL applications are ... people who have insight, get help and are honest get scrutinized, but those that don't, well, they can just answer no and get a free pass.
