Buy recommendations Henry supreme mag?

Post image

I just put a down payment on a Henry supreme 5.56 at my local gun store. I was under the impression that these magazines have to be pinned to 5 but my gun store employee said it's a 10 round limit which makes no sense to me. Is there some sort of loophole that he knows about and I don't? Or was he bullshitting / mistaken? Pic for attention.

Regardless, what is the best magazine option for these things in Canada? All I'm going to be using it for is target shooting for now.

Thanks In advance!

I’m under the impression that Henry supreme takes AR mags, so you can simply use AR pistol mags which are pinned to 10 rounds.
Had Henry chosen to use proprietary mags, there would be no limitations on mag capacity as it’s a manual action rifle.

What makes an ar mag a pistol mag? Sorry I'm actually very new to the firearms world, only had my PAL for about a year and a half now.

The law states that the limit is based on the "firearm the magazine was designed for" and that "pistol magazines can have 10 rounds"

Because the LAR15 "Pistol" was in canada for a minute, the LAR15 "Pistol" mag can be 10 rounds. This mag is a standard AR mage the only difference being that it was "designed for a pistol" which makes it able to have 10 rounds.

Welcome to Canadian gun laws brother, glad you're here!

To add: the rule of thumb I go with is that if the magazine has the words 'pistol magazine' or some other clear indication on it from the factory, then it's definitely a pistol magazine

yeah this isnt safe though, anyone can just etch pistol on it. The magazine has to be in the documented design for the gun. This is why we can't just write pistol on AR15 magazines.

As I say, has to be from the factory. It's pretty easy to tell if the text was included in the mold/stamping or added after the fact. Personally I always keep a paper copy of the RCMP special bulletin in my range bag if I'm using pistol mags in a rifle, just in case

Do you have a link to this document? I definitely want to do the same thing. Very smart.

Can't find it it right now, horse seems to have changed their website yet again. It's Special Bulletin 72, can probably find on via Wayback, was put out March of 2011 iirc. Will try and remember to get a working link after work

They moved to the new HTML website and the old SB72 got replaced with this: https://rcmp.ca/en/firearms/classes-firearms/maximum-permitted-magazine-capacity

Cheers chef, save me the work

Right, it has to say "pistol" on it from the factory.

What does from the factory mean? I am pretty sure you can legally 3d print ar magazines as long as they comply with the laws. Does this mean I can 3d print a 10 rds ar mag if is says pistol? I mean 3d printer is kind of the factory in this case?

What a great question, there's no proper answer to that, certainly not legally nor in the RCMP's interpretation of the law. Broadly speaking, they take it to mean that a magazine stamped "for pistol use only" from the factory, or is otherwise explicitly designed for a pistol (Glock magazine for example) can use 10 rounds but you can't etch that onto a rifle magazine and repin to 10 rounds.

It used to be an even more fun mess of laws when we still had the .50 beowulf magazines before the RCMP made up the "dual use" clause

The law clearly state that the handgun has to be "commonly available in Canada" for the limit to be 10.

Magazine designed for use in a handgun not commonly available in Canada are still limited to 5.

Whether or not the LAR15 Pistol is or was at some point commonly available in Canada is a question that have never been tried. Everyone is free to gamble that it is, I would not

Honestly it just says "pistol magazine" on the side lol. If the mag was designed for a semiauto rifle, it's pinned to 5. If it's designed for a pistol, it's allowed 10.

Since they're AR pistols they make AR pistol mags, even though they're really the same mag. Similar to how you can't saw off a shotgun to a 10 inch barrel, but a factory can sell a 10 inch barrel gun as long as it was made that way.

Normally this would be an FAQ redirect but let's learn together.

You can buy 10 round LAR15 pistol mags that are 100% legal and works with the Supreme.

1

u/feeddageek Jun 16 '26

that are 100% legal

That are believed by some to be legal, a legality that has never been tested in court or even had an opinion given by the RCMP

The Special Bulletin 72 says the kind of firearm it is designed for determines the maximum capacity, yes. But there is no legal opinion on "Does a magazine designed for the LAR15 pistol have a 5 or 10 rounds limit".

Is the LAR15 pistol a handgun commonly available in Canada is still an open question. You can argue on reddit that it is, I would not want to have to argue it in court.

The law is not magazine designed for handgun -> 10 rounds capacity

3 (1)(a)(i) magazine designed for a semi-automatic handgun that is not commonly available in Canada 5 rounds maximum
3 (1)(b) magazine designed for a semi-automatic handgun that is commonly available in Canada 10 rounds maximum

Dude, the RCMP has literally posted a bulletin about them, they are 100% legal just like any other 10rd pistol magazine…

If you don’t believe that they are legal, why don’t you contact your CFO and ask them yourself?

1

u/feeddageek Jun 17 '26

Have you read said bulletin ? It don't say what you think it says.

why don’t you contact your CFO and ask them yourself?

I don't own, and I have no intention to ever own a 10 rounds LAR15 pistol mag, why would I ever contact the CFP about them ?

Basically because there are magazines that at AR magazines that say “AR-15” or “AR-15 rifle” on them.

Then there are magazines that say “LAR-15” or “AR-15 Pistol” magazine on them.

The pistol ones are limited to 10 because they are for the AR-15 Pistol and in Canada we regulate what it’s intended for.

Yeah, it’s weird but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

Magazine capacity is based on the firearm it was designed for, and it is illegal to modify magazines in this particular context. So if you get a STANAG 4179 rifle magazine, it's max five rounds. If you get a STANAG 4179 compatible pistol magazine such as an MFT LAR-15 magazine, capacity is 10. If you get an almost compatible magazine like a BCL MRX bolt action magazine and modify your rifle to fit the magazine, then you can use the 20 round magazine

5

u/sargentmyself al Jun 16 '26

Canuck arms I believe made a bolt action rifle that takes proprietary mags very similar in footprint to AR mags. They have an extra vertical rib that prevents them from inserting into an AR magwell. I wish I could remember the rifle name.

You can modify the rifle to accept the magazines and it's perfectly legal, they sell them up to 20 rounds I believe. You will have to Dremel out part of the steel on the magwell but I believe there's been posts of people doing it successfully.

Do NOT modify the magazine to fit the rifle, you'll be getting into hot water about redesigning it and it could be considered now designed as an AR mag.

4

u/Prudent-Moment6608 Jun 16 '26

You’re likely thinking of black creek labs, they make a modified ar mag that holds 20 rounds that only functions in their MRX bolt actions- this mag has the extra rib you describe.

We have these instock right now, i just checked a pmag to be safe and can confirm ar compatability. So crossmags which are for ar pistols will fit and 10 rd capacity

2

u/Savings-Garbage-628 Jun 16 '26

I have one, the PMAG it comes with is a 10rd pinned to 5. I have only used cross-mags so far and they work great.

When AR-15s were legal, there were models of AR-15s that classified as a "pistol" because their overall length was less than 26". Magazines designed for pistols can have 10rd mags. This effectively made AR-15 magazines classify as "pistol magazines".
