First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Chipmunk is like a guy wearing a double sided piece of cardboard advertising cheap pizza on the street corner. He doesn't know, or care about the firearms or the confiscation, his job is to talk about how successful and amazing the program is and read. rather incompetently, off the papers that are printed for him. Nathalie Provost is the Queen, focus and driver of the program since the day it started, though putting her directly in charge would look to biased even for the liberals, so she just runs the entire thing from shadows.

She would have LOVED to see us all declared criminals the day after the amnesty expired and send in the army or swat teams to start dragging us out of our homes in cuffs. Without her corrupting influence it's possible Carney would have canceled the whole ordeal the first day, or at least just declared a permanent amnesty and left it for the future so he didn't have to spend a dime.

I can tell you this, not a small chunk of Alberta separatist directly cite the gun bans as a reason if not the primary reason they support separatism. Provost is literally doing permanent damage to the unity of the entire country with her fanatic crusade.

He invited her to run because she is a good candidate and incredibly popular in Quebec, so popular in fact he made her minister of nature. Hence what I meant by corrupting influence, he has to continue the program to keep her satisfied as part of his government, especially with a small margin majority. If she had been standing a little to the left way back when, there is a good chance this program wouldn't exist as it does today, or it may have been canceled if it did. The liberals run the candidates and support the "ideals" they need to win Ontario/Quebec, because there primary goal is power.

If tomorrow somehow the entire population of Quebec decided they all need an AR-15's because of Russia or something, the government would literally issue them themselves, because that would secure the votes they need to stay in power. 90% of The western province population don't agree with these bans, and the liberals don't care at all, they simply don't need there votes anyways.

That framing gives Carney a pass he hasn’t earned. Why does Carney get a free pass? He's just as much at fault for this.

If the confiscation program exists today, it exists because Carney chose to keep it. Ministers don’t force cabinet policy onto a prime minister, the PM appoints ministers, sets priorities, approves cabinet direction, and can replace anyone who won’t follow it.

Saying he has to continue it to keep Provost satisfied flips accountability upside down. If Carney thought the program was bad policy, he could end it, redesign it, replace the minister, or make a different political case. Governments do that all the time, hell frasers been on three major portfolios lol.

Either the Liberals are cynical and follow votes, or they’re ideologically committed to these policies but saying they’re powerless because of one candidate doesn’t fit either argument imo.

Stop carrying water for Carney by excusing him of this program. He's active choosing to be fiscally irresponsible and punish legal owners. The buck stops at his feet.

Carney is following the votes, Natalie is ideological, Carney works to keep the ideological MP's happy so he can keep the votes. Carney went a bridge to far for Steven Guilbeault over climate stuff and he was outta there, party leaders even within their own party aren't invincible tyrants, they need to hold a coalition of people who have similar but varied and sometimes conflicting beliefs together. He could end it, at significant political cost including having Provost, and possibly other MP's walk, maybe even flip to bloc/NDP, threatening his majority government. You think he will take that risk? No chance. At least this initial buyback portion is 100% going through, there was never a doubt in my mind about that.

Believe me I don't support Carney in any way, shape or form (As an Albertan I don't even support Canada anymore truth be told) but I also do not believe he is heavily ideologically committed to eternal attacks on firearms owners. If he was they would have OIC'd the SKS, aggressively pushed ahead bans on mags, attachments, or features, made an enforcement regime obvious for non-compliance (PAL cancelations, cops at the door, etc) and just generally pushed the additional measures that were in the works under Trudeau and poly demands every 8 hours on their twitter. And you know Provost and other fanatics are surely not being silent on it behind closed doors in meetings based on their unhinged rants/tweets in public, they aren't happy with the way the liberals are handling the file now, it's obvious, they have lost the political momentum. I think either they lose in the Supreme court or, even if they win, this program gets sunset after the current confiscation completes, probably with a no-use amnesty.

Honestly it’s such weak blackmail at this point in the game. The Poly shooting happened over 30 years ago. Most people would not even know about it if the government didn’t remind people every year at December.

Not weak. Single handedly caused the 2024 OICs. LPC told them no more bans and they didn’t invite them, Turd freaked and banned all the remaining guns.

What I am saying is that the blackmail should be weak but the government has empowered it to be much much stronger then it has. Imagine for a second if you will if the government just chose to ignore it. Just stopped caring. What’s Poly gonna do? Have their 15 minutes on Tv and complain on Twitter?

Yeah I agree it might look weak to a normal well adjusted human being but to libs its the end of the world. If it was a CPC government they'd tell them to suck it and carry on.
