Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I wonder what other insane thing Carney can do that the boomers will be in full support of that makes everyone else go "what the fuck?". 

Maybe we should push the government to actually do those taxes on home buying/selling since that would really hurt the boomers. We need to play their game where they do anything they can to make our lives more miserable to support their cruise filled life.

I truly just wanted to be left alone with my firearms but the boomers didnt like that I wasnt worshipping the ground they walked on. Truly the the most evil generation ever and the history books will NOT be kind to them.

The opposition is doing their part too by holding on to an unpopular leader. They should have ditched PP at the leadership review.

I always love seeing people who despise Pierre and the conservatives try to offer "helpful" advice. Might as well ask the party to dissolve so we can only have one ruling party. The conservatives couldn't do anything about the NDP imploding and the bloc losing huge chunks.

Remember. It is honestly impressive how hard people will try to smear the "other" party despite them not being in power for over a decade.

Must be some great tasting kool aid you've got there.

People need to get out of their right wing echo chambers. Talk to people in the real world, Pierre is very unpopular with lots of moderates even in the boomer generation, and even if it's wrong Pierre's image is tainted with his perception as a lifelong politician and he has been associated too much with Trump in the public eye for enough voters to accept him. I hope he can fix his image before the next election (or Carney does poorly enough to lose support) but right now things are not looking good for us. The CPC going to a clean slate with a new leader would have been better for our future chances in my opinion.

your strategy of winning with 35% of the vote because the other votes are split in 3 does not inspire hope for the future. Did you know conservatives used to get more than 50% of the vote when they had a likeable candidate?

Oh we're just making up statistics now to try and push a narrative? Let's just correct that misinformation and clear that up with a quick history lesson.

Conservatives aren’t the only party that benefits from vote splits, they literally all do (except the greens lol), I never understand why people think is some kind of gotcha. The Liberals governed multiple times with well under 40% of the vote too. In 2015, the Liberals got a majority government with 39.5% of the vote. In 2021 they formed government again with about 32%.

The idea that Conservatives “used to get over 50%” regularly isn’t really true in the modern era. Since the 1980s, hitting 50% nationally has been extremely rare for any federal party because Canada is more politically fragmented now and the landscape has changed significantly. Even highly successful Conservative leaders like Stephen Harper won majorities with around 39 to 40% of the vote.

There it is. I love how people somehow blame the entire state of election in the country to Pierre and the conservatives. Who needs nuance when you can just blame a single person and a single party?

You do realize the conservatives gained seats in the last election right? What could they have done when the bloc and NDP bled out over 28 seats?

What is your strategy? That they decapitate their party leader and run someone new or fragment the party so we can go to a one party country? That wouldn't work because literally anyone the conservatives run would get smeared. Are we just ignoring how the media treated O'Toole (Trump of the north!) or stone cold harper?

Should they be more Liberal? What's the point of being a conservative if you don't have conservative values? Should they just lie and then push their own agenda?

The easiest way for the Conservatives to get a government formed has always been the left breaking up with itself and the Bloc not shitting the bed while they stick to their guns and push their base, this isn't new and it's how multiple conservative governments have been formed in the past.

At the end of the day, elections are won by persuading enough voters in enough ridings; should the conservatives have pivoted and hammered more on cost of living or fighting trump or whatever appeals to the masses? Sure but hindsight is a harsh mistress, you should've bought a winning lottery ticket yesterday but here we are.
