Feets / Collection / My build Throw back to fun times.
Just about had this set up how I wanted to be. The only thing I was missing was a longer stock to increase the LOP for my long gangly self.
Seeing all these posts with SKSs in them really makes me regret trading mine off for a Mosserg 500 Mariner… that I never even shot and traded for an Axis, that I sold without shooting. 🤦🏽♂️
Gawd looking back I was such a schmuck of a kid. Lessons have been learned the hard way for sure.

The GOAT Eh-Kay, that I would still choose over an actual AK for several reasons.

I’ve never gotten to handle an AK, but outside of the factory safety selector I feel like they’d be similar enough.
I do agree though, what’s mine is mine.

I handled one at a rental gun range on Cambodia, so I may be biased but the Type 81 feels better.
I’m not a fan of the safety on the 81, but it’s a very small gripe on an otherwise excellent 20th century milsurp that was legal.

That’s fair, I feel like all stamped guns would have the same “cheap” feeling to them but clearly they’re out there holding their own.
I did end up putting a 90° safety on my T81 and honestly, that fixed my single pain point. After that it was close to perfect as a guy could ask.

I just pulled out my 81SE for some dry firing, and I wish I’d shot it more before it became a safe queen.
Mine wasn’t even fully broken in, but function was always 100%.
I was particularly impressed by the detent click adjustable rear sight, which reminded me of an M16A2 rear sight.
A very regal queen she is, though.
Pouring one out for one of the greatest Canadian NR rifles of all time. 😔

What slightly bothers me with 81s - is that receiver metal feels a bit too thin. I wonder if it’s the same with AKs. Never actually got to handle the AK, starting to wonder if I ever get a chance to

Yeah, stamped steel receivers were always meant to be cheap and easy to manufacture in large numbers, and have noticeable flex.
Some AKs had machined receivers, but those are uncommon and also heavier.
The Type 81 came about because the Chinese military was dissatisfied with the AK for the following reasons:
1) poor accuracy; 2) cracked receivers; 3) no last-round bolt lock; and 4) no adjustable gas block.
The Type 81 looks a bit goofy, but is functionally superior to the AK, and mine was pretty accurate with Norinco non-corrosive.
All the easily-fouled parts are chrome-lined, and the bolt lug recesses are so easy to clean compared to an AR.
Overall I was pleasantly surprised and impressed when I took apart my T81SE, and then again when I shot it. 👍🧐

Man these were honestly one of the funnest firearms I’ve ever owned. Outside of rimfire stuff I don’t think I’ve ever put so many rounds down range in such a short amount of time.
I’d happily jump on the Makasi or Carmel if I had the funds to do it. Specially with the ammo that’s just collecting dust for now.
If I had to pick though, I think the Carmel wins. It doesn’t exactly fit the bill but to me it looks like a SCAR you’d find on Wish or Temu. If you squint and cock your head to the side, it looks close enough. lol

Proven more on the market plus it can take Ak mags and 300 mags as well so in the future they could release a barrel to match these calibres

Politics aside obviously, isn’t it the other way around? I have both on pre order. Just deciding on build quality right now, but it looks like the CSR has more review and use from their military.

like I said above it takes 762 and 300 mags and the 556 mags so possibility of barrel swap in the future and also I like the design of it more tbh and it’s full aluminum and corrosion resistance the Carmel is reinforced polymer and some reviews says it’s heavier than expected if you look at some YouTube videos but I find them both cool and if we only had the Carmel I would still pre order it I just prefer the Makasi since we have options now and I like the size of it compare to the Carmel

It’s made by IWI. Politics aside their products are probably amongst some of the most battle proven designs, seeing they are often in service within a certain military that shall remain unnamed. I’ve shot the tavor, tar, ace, and arad, all of which impressed me.

That’s totally fair. It is hard to hold a candle to something that has actually been tested in some of the roughest and most demanding environments.
Really the only thing that could somewhat skew the results in non-battle tested designs would be for something to be proven in a harsh Canadian winter. At that point I could see a bit of a challenge between two options.

I think it’s a mixed bag when it comes to winter. Piston systems in general are quite reliable when it comes to extreme conditions compared to gas impingement. I know that the galil ace, being based on the ak’s long stroke performs excellently within extreme cold. The arad and tavor however remains less tested, although tavor does see service with indian special forces and paratroopers, and they often operate in the himalayas which of course is very cold. The carmel on the other hand has probably seen the least professional testing in such environments although from what i heard from american civilian shooters it’s very accurate and flat shooting
Edit: the short stroke rotating system it uses is extremely similar to the cz bren, which has seen extensive use by special forces especially in ukraine during the winter, and reports show it performed very well.

I feel like I’m a regular SKS it might be a bit odd. With the D varient (detachable mags) it would look pretty alright.

I wish I could have had an under-folder stock with the standard infantry profile barrel with grenade spigot.

Damn these were so sweet. Hate I missed the boat on these. With how these prohibitions are going it’s almost better to lock in anything even if it gets banned. At least there’s a chance they’re undone or you can be grandfathered
