News / Politics / Activism Are the feds actually going to be able to collect tens of thousands of guns by 10/30, or do we think the amnesty's getting extended?

Around 67K declared their firearms for the buyback and apparently they haven't started collecting yet.

With just over 5 months to go and a whole slew of law enforcement refusing to lift a finger to help, they're not actually going to get this done by 10/30, are they?

(I know the SCC could grant an injunction to extend it because they're agreed to hear the CCFR's case, but I'm referring to the complete lack of progress on the buyback itself as the deadline approaches.)

We'll just keep kicking that can down the road

This is probably a question for the politics thread, but we dont know, id bet on an extension depending of the SCC tho.

politics thread

I haven't seen a sticky for a while, is it still a thing? I don't even see the weekly FAQ thread anymore either.

u/MourningWood1942 May 18 '26

I doubt it, but they can still keep it prohibited so they will be stuck in everyone’s safe indefinitely but illegal to own. I feel like that’s their plan, then blame us saying saying something like “we offered compensation now you missed out”

However I do think they will tie it in to unrelated things. If police enter your house for any reason, even a mistake, and see you have a newly prohibited firearm then you get charged for it.

15

u/necros911 May 18 '26

Has there been a case where a homeowner defends himself with a prohibited firearm? Not sure what the outcome would be. I think Govt is waiting for this to happen more

11

u/Candid-Tomato2971 May 19 '26

What is considered prohibited/non restricted changes depending on which way the wind is blowing. If you want the jury to take your side, make sure it has wood furniture

u/99spider May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

If it happens right now with a newly prohibited firearm, you should be in the same legal situation as if the firearm were in its previous classification.

If the amnesty is actually allowed to lapse, then you will certainly be convicted for the possession, but in principle shouldn't be at any further risk of a murder/manslaughter conviction.

This is assuming our anarcho-tyrannical government doesn't treat you differently than career criminals. The possession charge is supposed to be an entirely separate question from whether your actions were to protect your life.

u/Office_Responsible May 18 '26

They could issue blanket warrants for arrest. Make a mistake, need to go somewhere where they check those things and you’re screwed. They could just lock us out of life basically until compliance is forced. Could even take the freeze bank accounts route if they were feeling extra authoritarian

13

u/PatsNeg-CH May 19 '26

No such thing as a blanket warrant, and there’s no way they are tying up the courts swearing 100,000 Informations without investigating to confirm reasonable grounds still exist for each and every person they want to get a warrant for.

Even if they did and a JP signed off on all those warrants, a clerk has to process and add all of those warrants to CPIC one by one, along with all the filing and paperwork that comes along with each one.

Then, they would need to have enough staff on deck to deal with pulling the hard copy of the warrant every time a police agency arrests someone on one of those warrants. Then have someone deal with the court scheduling and file coordination/submission to Crown/the Courts, who would not appreciate when defendants start showing up to court dates and the prosecution hasn’t received any material and look like idiots in front of the judge.

As out to lunch as the Feds (lack of) plans for this program are, this kind of baseless speculation is equally uninformed and unrealistic.

u/VosperCA May 20 '26

This person CPIC's, or at least does courts stuff :)

11

u/Reasonable_Hall2346 May 19 '26

Blanket warrants for all the registered? Where only 1/3 of the registered were declared? That would be a total collapse of our already strained justice system.

13

u/dgod40 May 18 '26

Non of this is happening. It's like you want it to happen so you can keep screaming "authoritarian!" The smartest, easiest, and most likely to happen action is recind RPALs of known previously restricted firearm owners until they declare destruction. That is all. Anyone with a previously NR is going to be sitting with a safe queen.

I'm just seeing what's happening. They are loosing a lot of support for this program and if they could get out without looking like fools they would. At this point they are going to do the bare minimum to see this through and pat themselves on the back while vilifying gun owners who didn't comply.

15

u/splooges May 19 '26

They are loosing a lot of support for this program and if they could get out without looking like fools they would.

"Fiscally responsible" Carney had multiple off-ramps to drop the program (cost, police + provincial resistance, etc). He didn't.

4

u/dgod40 May 19 '26

You guys seem to think the majority of Canadians are on the side of gun owners. I can tell you, that is not true. If Trudeau didn't start this nonsense, most people wouldn't care if you had an AR15. But now that this moronic program has gone through its paces, the Libs can't just throw it away and say "all this hoopla was for nothing". The general population would throw a fit if the government has to come out and say it's ok for you to have an AR15. There is no off ramp except for this SCC case. The ccfr better be fucking using all the money we donated for the best fucking lawyers.

7

u/gspotcowboy May 19 '26

the Libs can't just throw it away and say "all this hoopla was for nothing".

100% agreed. They knew the LGR was 2 billion over budget in 2002 and it took another decade (and another party) to finally get rid of it, because the smoldering embers of the Chretien Liberals still couldn't admit it was a failure

1

u/Hopeful_Relation_441 May 19 '26

not with a minority hopefully with a majority he will listen to minister of gophers and popcans less

4

u/NL1839 May 18 '26

Yeah, have people forgotten about what they did during Covid? It wasn’t that long ago.

4

u/WeightedDips95 May 19 '26

yes they have. Its funny talking to people about all this hantavirus stuff. Was talking to a buddy that went along with everything, and he said "im not doing another lockdown!", buddy youll do what they tell you just like you did before lol. All it will take is a couple CBC segments about not being selfish or whatever and people will be spying on their neighbors and throwing their lives away again. Nothing is ever learned.

2

u/WeightedDips95 May 19 '26

>It's like you want it to happen so you can keep screaming "authoritarian!"

Calling the LPC authoritarian... how ridiculous!...

47

u/rastamasta45 May 18 '26

The problem with threads and questions like this is that even the LPC and the rat fucker fat cheek chipmunk dont know. This whole program from the ground up is a complete mess. They (LPC) truly didnt expect the police resistance they got. Now they’re just taking it day by day hoping it’ll go in their favour. They truly dont know and so with that, we don’t know.

Will they let it lapse and just make everyone a criminal, will they extend it, will they only do targeted extensions, will Provolone have another meltdown. Nobody knows

14

u/Ok-Turnover4223 May 19 '26

Either way I am totally not buying grease and digging a big ass hole under my neighbor's tree in the middle of the night on Oct. 29th...

5

u/WeightedDips95 May 19 '26

This. Be wary of anyone speaking in absolutes(unless they say things will only get worse). Been hearing libs wont do X or ban Y since before may 2020 and since. Libs werent even supposed to win the last election. Add to that as youve said that the libs dont even know what theyre doing.

2

u/Hopeful_Relation_441 May 19 '26

they will bribe every police region with our own money eg waterloo

Hilariously true.

16

u/thxxx1337 May 18 '26

I highly doubt it will begin before parliament gets shut down so they probably won't even start it til September. There's no way it will be done by end of Oct

4

u/DougMacRay617 May 18 '26

It doesn't need to finish by end of Oct, it just needs to start

14

u/TheJasonJBailey May 18 '26

It would need to finish by then, otherwise people would still be in possession (waiting to sell theirs) after it ends.

6

u/Reasonable_Hall2346 May 19 '26

I wouldn’t say “waiting to sell”. The people that declared would be waiting for their confiscation appointment with a minimal to no chance of compensation. If they cant finish by amnesty period nobody should be willingly going to the police with their prohibited firearm.

53

u/Barbarian_818 May 18 '26

They'll never extend it as long as Nathalie is calling the shots. They'll likely just let the amnesty period lapse and rely on attrition and individual criminal charges to whittle down the numbers.

I can't see them doing any mass action like door to door arrests because of the nascent threat of Alberta separation. One of the big factors driving the separatist movement is the long standing feeling of getting routinely shafted in order to treat Quebec as Ottawa's favorite child.

This whole Anti-Gun campaign is a giant neon lit example of that. Fuck over hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of other Canadians so that one very influential urban Quebecois liberal gets to exact vengeance for the trauma she suffered. She is on a crusade to punish every law abiding gown owner for the crimes of one.

Mass arrests would take that pile of resentment and set it in fire.

I can think of one "slow burn" way to find and confiscate those now banned firearms and it is actually somewhat cheap and easy to implement. But there's no way I'm going to voice it lest it give them inspiration.

u/Flat-Dark-Earth Big Bore Specialist May 18 '26

This can will be kicked down the road for years to come.

There is still political capital to squeeze.

27

u/WSBBroker May 18 '26

Gov is clapped. No payment . No use of property . No clear path forward. Laws not justified in the first place… just theft.

10

u/Barbarian_818 May 19 '26

Oh, but the law IS justified to them. Nathalie is just burning up with that Holy War energy isn't she? People engaged in a Crusade, who feel they are on A Mission From God can always find ways to justify what they do.

The anti gun crowd are deeply convinced that universal disarmament will save hundreds of thousands of innocent lives. There is a lot of sentiment to the effect "if it saves the life of even one child, it is worth it"

Like the assholes spitting venom outside of abortion clinics, it lets them feel like they are accomplishing a noble deed.

11

u/Goliad1990 May 19 '26

The anti gun crowd are deeply convinced that universal disarmament will save hundreds of thousands of innocent lives

They're not dude. They just hate you. They don't think they're making any positive difference in society, they're just taking pleasure in hurting you, because you're a "redneck/chud/gun fetishist". It's purely culture war.

10

u/BigheadReddit May 18 '26

What guns ?

10

u/No_Win_9797 May 18 '26

There’s a thread about this, and it’s mentioned that they won’t enforce it until the end of January’27 suggesting the amnesty will go atleast until then

1

u/Ommageden on May 23 '26

Link?

2

u/No_Win_9797 May 23 '26

Wish I could help you on that, it’s somewhere in Canadaguns subreddit,
I had a short look but couldn’t find it

1

u/Ommageden on May 23 '26

No worries thanks for trying

9

u/TarkovSundays May 19 '26

Yeah I’m really intrigued to see what’s going to happen😂 gonna be an absolute shit show that they created because myself and countless others that I personally know aren’t too keen on handing our guns in. There’s gonna be a lot of people in jail if they go that route and not a whole lot of guns confiscated…

6

u/New-Replacement-2352 May 19 '26

I think there has to be an extension, because they still have no way of collecting these firearms.
They have zero personnel or even means of transportation and storage (and destruction?) as far as I’m aware. They haven’t even figured that out yet after 6 years, and only a few months left to go. It is logistically impossible given the timeframe they have given themselves and they will not have a chance to collect even a fraction of declared firearms before the end of October.

Any reasonable government would offer an extension in a situation similar to this, to prevent people from becoming felons through no fault of their own.

That being said I could also see the liberals just rug pulling gun owners and declaring owners criminals even though it was the government that failed to hold up its end. I’ve learned to expect the worst possible outcome with these people. Absolute SNAKES.

2

u/Goliad1990 May 19 '26

I think there has to be an extension

There will be, but it will only be for the people who declared. If you're not registered on their confiscation list, this October is final.

5

u/PrestigiousStatus711 May 19 '26

Either way I'm keeping my guns.

11

u/Dummy_Wire May 18 '26

I have to imagine they’ll extend the amnesty for at least the alleged 67,000 registered buyback guns, assuming (reasonably) that they can’t round them up in the next few months.

Why would they extend it for the other uncounted and uncountable hundreds of thousands of now prohibited guns, whose owners aren’t participating in the buyback, though?

8

u/Geralt-of-Rivai May 18 '26

Will be interesting to see how it plays out if it's not extended and there becomes thousands and thousands of gun owners now in illegal possession of prohibited firearms. Are they going to persecute them all? Are they going to raid houses? Or quietly just let them be illegal in perpetuity

8

u/DougMacRay617 May 18 '26

All of the above

6

u/Dummy_Wire May 18 '26

I don’t think they’ll go door-to-door, but like, if you own a now-prohibited, formerly-restricted (registered) rifle, it wouldn’t be hard for feds to pick people like that up just whenever they come into contact with them naturally. I wouldn’t want to be in that potential position, and it’s literally the only reason I never got my RPAL.

6

u/Scary-Detail-3206 May 18 '26

Same reason I never got an RPAL. It was clear from the start that registration was a precursor to confiscation.

I think they are just going to cut their losses with the prohibited non-restricted guns in circulation. The government doesn’t actually care about getting the guns, they just want the press conferences telling their base that they are “cracking down on assault weapons” whatever they think that means.

2

u/Boattailfmj May 20 '26

Same. Kinda regret not getting an rpal and some pistols, but kinda don't regret it. I might be wrong but I believe rpal is subject to warrantless inspections where nrpal is not. I could have that wrong though.

4

u/Geralt-of-Rivai May 18 '26

Former restricteds would be easy, they know who has them and still has them. Could easily just not allow those people to renew their PAL when their expiry comes up until they deal with their prohibited firearms

3

u/Dummy_Wire May 18 '26

Yeah, they have lots of options that don’t require risking Waco 2.0, for anyone in that boat.

2

u/Upstairs-Zebra8115 May 18 '26

This is what will happen. They'll refuse to renew PALs and force people into turning in their guns if they want to renew.

1

u/Goliad1990 May 19 '26

Exactly. That's how it's going to happen.

1

u/Acrobatic-Catch1553 May 22 '26

I would say it won’t be practical to try and differentiate between the participants and non participants. Extending the amnesty for all is the only reasonable action. Yes, I know they are inherently unreasonable but it is so much easier to say the amnesty is extended until the declared guns are collected.

9

u/necros911 May 18 '26

Or somehow they get warrants for every Firearm store to get their records on exact firearms purchased

8

u/NL1839 May 19 '26

Oh that registry that wasn’t a registry? Oh but they wouldn’t do that. They just made that law for no reason, right? /s

4

u/gspotcowboy May 19 '26

Dude I think everyone is massively underestimating how much paperwork there is to go through.

I don't doubt that my LGS has a storage unit full of paper receipts because they aren't electronic. It will take hundreds of man hours/overtime to make that data useful lol

Big retailers will probably fold fast and I hope everyone takes notes at who does so we can shame them

5

u/SirKickBan May 19 '26

And even then, if they did knock at a few million doors asking "Hey where's the previously-NR you bought?", how many times do they have to hear "Oh, I destroyed that back before the prohibition." until they realize it's pretty much futile?

4

u/calgary75 May 19 '26

Why doesn’t AB bring in the Sask storage solution where you store your prohibs on behalf of the government? I have heard noting about this.

3

u/PrestigiousStatus711 May 19 '26

I think something will be announced before Oct 30.

3

u/Brisk-1 May 19 '26

It’s the long game, the way I see it.. firearms become safe queens and they have to be surrendered when you die with no exceptions… strict laws in the mean time if they’re ever found outside of your safe.

9

u/JBOYCE35239 May 18 '26

I expect theyll use the currently registered database of prohibited owners and threaten everyone with arrest warrants for non compliance. Pony patrol can pump those out hundreds per day and then local PD will have no choice but to execute them. Then you'll get charges and lose your PAL. Local PD will then have to confiscate all your guns instead of just the prohibited ones

Pretty much, the foundation for the Digital prisons is being built as we speak. I find it humorous when people believe these data centers are being built to make our own Ai videos & slop at a faster rate. When in reality they are quite clearly going to be the nerve centers for the systems that will dictate our everyday lives, but thats enough outta me, il take my tin foil hat off now.

3

u/NL1839 May 19 '26

Remember when a certain prime minister said they were asking for too much? They don’t care. They only care about getting Quebec votes

1

u/BilboBaggSkin May 19 '26

They still need to collect them though. Like we can’t transport them.

2

With mass noncompliance, they will have to extend it or admit it was a failure.

1

u/LGzJethro66 May 19 '26

They can revoke your license if you don't comply but how do they know if the gun was non restricted ?? Unless you got zero if you tried to get compensated so a now prohibited firearm

u/RedditSgtMajor May 21 '26

Collection has started. I know of a community in central Canada that had a drop off point set up a week ago with people showing up. It was staffed by RCMP.
