Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

Carney is having a lot of issues, from being called out for doing fuckall, and with his caucus right now, potentially another one leaving. I suspect we will be having somr gun bans/gun law changes coming to help distract the people from his failures and to unify the party on something. Mag bans maybe? More semi auto bans? Other gun bans?

"Ough but they can't even do the current gun bans how will they handle the new ones!?" Doesn't matter, thats a future issue he needs something now.

I could always be wrong, but I don’t think we’re staring at any more gun bans in the near future. Parliament is about to break for summer, and this whole thing is a mess. A mess that’s headed to the Supreme Court.

I expect them to make announcements on things that are actively gripping public attention which orbits around the economy because so far that’s where the most positive press is coming from for the government, with “trade deals” and expediting reviews for national projects.

Gun bans don’t offer that release valve anymore, and they haven’t for a while because nobody cares anymore. This whole thing is ballooning in cost to the point where even the media doesn’t even fluff it anymore.

I’m not really expecting anything to get announced.

The Makasi and Carmel are 100% getting the banhammer in the near future, that's not in question.

But Wendy Cukier, in that interview with TVO that people are rage-sharing, did say that she thinks the laws are fine now when asked about what should come next. If the anti-gun lobbyists are now shifting from "we need new laws" to "the laws are now good and we need to focus on enforcement", then yeah, I agree we probably won't see anything large-scale anytime soon.

I think it's a bit beyond "nobody cares". They've made such a fuckup of the confiscation program, and caught so much controversy for it, that they're probably going to be actively avoiding gun control as a wedge issue for the forseeable future. Gary did say as much in his leaked tape.

I did find that part of the interview interesting when Wendy Cukier didn't demand anymore gun bans. Idk if that was her just saying 'the right thing' for the camera or if some segments of the anti gun movement in Canada are realizing that laws are useless when you have no meaningful way to enforce them. You can make every paper law you want but if you are not capable of enforcing then in a meaningful capacity they are useless.

I think it’s them not wanting to rock the boat anymore and risk pushing the whole project over the edge. This whole thing is being met with unprecedented resistance on almost every level, and the program is objectively closer to complete and total collapse than it is to a measurable success.

I’m not defending the guy, and I know people here are sick of hearing it, but the objective truth is Carney has shown very little enthusiasm for the program, and has even breezed past it entirely when directly asked about violent crime. That is completely intentional. He’s actively trying to distance himself from the program and the gun control groups have noticed. It’s causing them a whole lot of heartburn and anxiety.

Just look at MP Provost during the last media briefing. Look at what she was saying and her body language. She was begging for people to rat out friends and family. She shoved the minister out of the way, she was visibly anxious and rattled. That’s not what confidence looks like. That’s what it looks like when your program is collapsing in slow-motion and you haven’t been given assurances behind closed doors.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some internal friction between the gun control groups and government. This whole mess is going to the Supreme Court because of how the gun control groups demanded these bans be imposed. Now the government stands a very real chance of having their executive power severely weakened, depending on the Supreme Court ruling which is effectively a coin toss.

Current political and economic conditions aren’t very conducive for a multi-billion dollar gun ban and if they keep pushing for more, they risk dragging the whole program beneath the waves and drowning it entirely. They largely got what they wanted, asking for more will threaten this program, not benefit it. All it takes is for some popular social programs to be cut while the gun ban remains unscathed for people to start asking pointed questions, which we’ve seen already.

I don’t think people really understand how badly this program is going because we’ve become so withdrawn.

I think this is to go and show the sheer hubris of the anti gun community. Instead of waiting for the first OIC to be done they demanded more. Now it’s become a absolute mess for a project to deal with just by the sheer volume.
