Application / Regulation advice Sales tax on first Nations territory.
Hi,
As a law‑abiding citizen, I’m trying to find out whether gun stores on First Nations territory charge sales tax on firearms and ammunition. I’d hate to drive two hours only to discover they don’t charge it. Does anyone know? I’m especially wondering about Kahnawake. I'm not a member of the First Nations.

Depends. Where I go, nobody pays taxes. They have no love for the government. Gas, tobacco, ammo... I've never had to pay taxes for any of them.

Bullshit. If it’s a licensed business they’ll be on the hook for pst/gst/gst on any non FN sales.

There's several gas stations on band land in BC that openly sell tax exempt fuel to whitey. And they're not out in the sticks either.

Damn near all of em in SW Ontario. And in some cases these aren't small two pump outfits, there's one that comss to mind that puts most of the stations in the city to shame, size, number of pumps, stuff they offer on site, etc.

Well, I can repeat myself, I suppose, for the people who don't come with me to the Rez. Or you could just re-read it. Either way, what I said is true. The government will never go after them because it's very bad press to go after FN for a small amount of tax dollars, especially when they have know idea how much is even unpaid.

AFAIK, they will charge non-natives any applicable taxes.

That defines what natives are entitled to from business off reserve, not what business on reserves collects in taxation.

Kahnawake doesn’t charge tax. You can always call lahache shooting range or Mccomber’s archery and ask though.

They do they just add it to the price and put up a sign no tax, but if you compare prices youll notice. 1 time i noticed there was a saving on 1 item was 50$ cheaper at la hache if you included tax at the other spot.. but the drive , the service and warranty seemed more convenient to pay the 50$ extra

Rez near me in ontario has a tax free gun shop. And a tax free everything else. Food gas smokes fireworks whatever plus a pot shop every 50 feet

The gunstore might actually be connected to a rez pot shop now that I think about it, at least shares a parking lot

That's a bit of a tour for me. Not much in the way of ammo stores on the reserves local-ish to me in SW Onterrible.

Are you thinking about going to all things outdoors? Save the trip. The tax is in the prices. Owner “partnered” with ben from highfalls and he just added all the tax into the prices. I am from ty here and just go to s&j and use my band card in store to get the tax off a bit to save ben is using it to avoid certain tax’s and bs and weldon is a woman beater(guy he “partnered” with)

I’ve never been charged tax on any FN reserve. The legal mandate is unenforced

Legally I think they do charge tax but in my experience in eastern ontario, they get away with giving everyone the same treatment, partly what drives a lot of business.

I used to work at a native business on the reserve years ago. We said we are not tax collectors. If you want to pay the taxes, contact the CRA. We had a few try, and they were unable to remit.

You will 100% have to pay tax. Only FN members exempt from sales tax on retail items on reserve.

If you dont have a status card, then you will have to pay the tax on it.
