There's two bills in I think New York, which is trying to reclassify everything that's not a firearm (BB, pellet, airsoft, paintball) into "replica." And since replicas are required to have plugged barrels, it would end the culture of children being introduced to wholesome gun ownership and safety. Thus wiping out most new gun owners in a generation or two.
We're next to that already, airsoft and BB guns are "uncontrolled firearms" and have to be in a strict muzzle energy band to be legal. For airsoft it works out to 366-500fps with an 0.20g BB. Under is a "replica firearm" and those are illegal (or at least illegal to import, somewhat more grey in-country, but it's why we can't get stuff like nonfiring model guns), above is the same as any nonrestricted and requires a PAL.
