News / Politics / Activism Liberals quietly cut money available for compensation in "buyback" by nearly $200 million

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EhXUU2OV6w&t=3s

According to Calibre Magazine looking at Treasury Board documents,, the Liberals have apparently cut the money available for compensation in their "buyback" from $250 million to $64.8 million, with no notice to current or future participants.

We tried to to tell everyone their guns would be seized and they'd get nothing.....

Getting my RPAL in 2 weeks, hoping to fuck that the government gets some sense and reverses some of this insane lawmaking that's happened.

Its the Liberals, they will never reverse it. grandfathering at best is maybe what will happen.

There is definitely a path to reversal, the laws are based on aesthetics and looks and not function. Nothing that is based in ludicrous rhetoric will ever be permanent.

Canadian gun owners have always lived under ludicrous rhetoric.... that's why for 30 years you could own a SVT 40 but not a Dragunov, a M1a but not a FAL, a BRS-99 but not an a UZI. The Liberals are physically incapable of letting it go. And the Conservatives fail to reverse things to the fullest due to PR fatigue.

There is no dimension where a liberal leader could be seen putting AR-15s and the like back on the shelves again. Best you can hope for as a new shooter is no new bans, some C21 compliant semis, and maybe suppressor legalization under a CPC majority.

Suppressor legalization will only ever happen if non gun owners revolt against the forced full-blast noise from hunters' guns and "demand" that the government legalize suppressors. I would personally be stoked if they start by at least legalizing them for airguns. It still amazes me (not positively) - every time I think about it - that even airguns have to have the factory baffles removed before being legal for sale in Canada. It's friggin' airguns, you morons!

Let's be realistic lol. They won't legalize suppressors for any reason. They'll just ban hunting rifles over insert meaningless arbitrary decibel level here.

... wait can we still buy BRS-99's lol asking for a friend.

C21 should have been balled up and used to clean a pigs asshole years ago. I genuinely think a large part of the issue is that the anti-gun community is being headed by survivors of the Polytechnique school shooting, and with the southern example of wild West gun laws it's easy to provide fact based evidence for more gun control. However banning guns based on looks is just absolute lunacy and anyone who saw that and voted it through with full understanding should be checked for a brain worm. I am ALL for gun control and responsible gun ownership, it is just super annoying and frustrating that direction is headed. It isn't about responsible gun ownership, it's about no gun ownership. I really think that a tax stamp system would work so well here where if you want prohibited firearms you simply have to pay the government X amount of money for a stamp in order to own that and use that legally. Same with suppressors extended magazines and everything else a firearm enthusiast would want to own and use. That way it's more monitored, the gov't makes money off of the gun owners and their wanton need for tacticool pewpews. Hell I would happily pay a couple thousand a year if it meant I could go to a range and fire a gun I actually want, the way it was actually designed to be fired. I honestly think the fact that they are not monetizing it is absolute Insanity, there's a market there even if it's small and the increased taxation revenue in each province or territory would be worth it because it's going in place something that doesn't exist. Anything over a zero is a win. Although I do recognize that the people that tend to make it to higher places in government also tend to not have the most intelligent view on some things.

That is one of the dumbest takes I’ve ever read here. Begging the govt to charge for tax stamps to use what we’ve already safely used/owned for years? 🤮 The fact you think that US policy gives anyone “fact based evidence” for more gun regulation up here when we’ve never had fact based regulations is just comical. When will people like you get it through your heads? The LPC hates gun owners and cares not one iota about us. They will happily regulate gun ownership out of existence, will not conoensate anyone and if you don’t comply they will ruin your life. This is what is currently ongoing, how you fail to see this is just wild.

Funny how they ban based on scary looks but yet it's perfectly legal to buy without a license a flamethrower that is absolutely terrifying.

grandfathering at best is maybe what will happen.

Grandfathering is a trap. It's confiscation over a longer period of time

They'll get you to willingly register and you can bet your ass it won't be with use and they'll rug pull it down the road. We've seen this episode before.

3

u/HankHippoppopalous Mar 20 '26

Yup. Have you seen the smoking ban in Australia ? Thats literally how they did it.

3

u/Murray3-Dvideos Mar 19 '26

Indeed, but at least it gives a potential Conservative majority the chance to implement " with use".

It's not unrealistic considering it's already where we are at with handguns.

All we are left with rn is no compensation and major legal liability. Grandfathering with future use is the only realistic outcome short of full on Tin Foil Hat grade stuff.

12

u/Lumindan Mar 19 '26

Indeed, but at least it gives a potential Conservative majority the chance to implement " with use".

That's not how that will work. Grandfathering closes the book on that part of ownership entirely. It'd be the final fuck you moment at arms ownership.

It's not unrealistic considering it's already where we are at with handguns.

A nebulous and death by a thousand cuts level of ownership? Yeah I guess. Handguns are mia for majority of folks and the work required to amend c21 is gonna suck.

You don't want grandfathering. You think you do but youre wrong. At least being stuck in the grey zone of extended amnesty means you can readdress the issue down the road.

Plus registration leads to confiscation and the first step of grandfathering is, guess what? Building a list of newly registered items.

The conservatives will have an easier time if we don't get grandfathering.

I think Carney wants closure to the matter tho. Amnesty extensions don't give him that. So I doubt we'll see it.

13

u/Lumindan Mar 19 '26

If Carney wanted closure he had ample opportunities to do so. I don't understand why people keep repeating this point as if it's fact

Every single time he's had a chance to kill the program, he's doubled down on it. During the election, after the election z during the budget, during the multiple house sessions, after the leaked comments by his own public safety minister. He has committed to it EVERY single time. Hell, he was advising Trudeau on matters before hand.

At what point do you stop giving him the benefit of the doubt?

They'll keep kicking the can down the road because if he closes it, he admits that they've spent decades targeting the wrong people and doing nothing but burn tax money for votes and the illusion of public safety.

9

u/Murray3-Dvideos Mar 19 '26

I didn't mean closure in our favor. I think it was an unfullfilled promise Trudeau made that Carneys election campaign saw as a valid vote gainer rather then loser. They want to try and thread the needle by appeasing Montreal enough to not lose their vote, but also not piss off tax payers by blowing billions on a proper buyback. Carneys got bigger fish to fry, hence why hes said very little regarding the matter and just left all the PR damage to big cheek Gary to absorb.

The "controversial" guns are more or less banned, the "promised buyback" ran its course (statistically, it failed and wasted a billion), but they'll rely on dodging that subject since they're experts at that. The only remaining issue will be dealing with the suspected non compliance with formally NR firearms. They'll either ignore it, or if it becomes bad enough PR, they'll look for something along the lines of "grandfathering."

1

u/Longjumping_Deer3006 Mar 20 '26

Can you buy grandfathered guns or no?

2

u/Lumindan Mar 20 '26

It really depends how they'd go about it.

I highly suspect they'll just rot in the safe with zero use options.
