Buy recommendations Cheap bolt. 22 recommendations?

Add $35 to the price of the Norinco for a real CZ 452 magazine and it'll run like butter. The factory magazines are the weak point.

I purchased the Norinco as my first 22. The action and mag are made poorly and it’s a bit finicky at first. After around 100 rounds, things started to loosen up and work smoothly. I’m happy about my purchase, it’s accurate enough and it goes bang when I pull the trigger. (Paired with a 20$ scope off marketplace)

While the cheap stuff can be enticing, it’s worth getting a little bit nicer .22, both for the shooting experience, and because there’s resale value.
Buy once, cry once and all that. Something like a CZ or Tikka might be twice the price, but they really are worth the money.

I mean if you’re choosing between a brand new rifle that comes with ammo or an old busted Cooey that needs stock and bluing work then I don’t think the decision is as difficult as it seems. That being said, buy both

Buy both is a hilarious answer. Yeah that's fair. The coey is a steal of a price and I've heard bad things about the jw15a but I'm looking for bare bones budget for plinking so I'm a wee bit torn

I've had a 1988 10/22 for 30 of it's 38 years and now have a 2016 one with the SS barrel and an ArchAngel Precision Stock in Desert Tan with adjustable cheek riser and length of pull. Got the original black poly stock with it as well.
For the target shooting I like doing I'd like to get a decent bolt action .22 with a similar type aftermarket stock. Bolt actions should give better results at longer ranges as they aren't giving up bullet power to slam a bolt back with every shot. I have 100yd in my back yard for target shooting with the 22s or shotguns and an abandoned gravel pit just 4 miles away with about 150yds of space for my bigger pew-pews.

That's true, if OP is looking for accuracy he's better off with a bolt. Personally if I'm shooting for accuracy I'll do it with something stronger but to each his own

I needed some outdoor hobbies in my retirement so getting back into fishing and shooting. I'll be target shooting .22 at home and elsewhere and reaching out much further elsewhere with my Enfield .303 equipped with a new 10-50X60 Nikko Stirling Diamond scope sitting on it now. Talking to a buddy in town today and he belongs to a gun club with up to 1000yd range so will be joining that one this spring I think. He goes to shoot his handguns and if I buy my own ammo I'll get to play with those too.
Need to sight in the scope on my .270 as well and I'd like to zero it at 200yds.
Shopping around now for a bolt action .22 I can put a scope on. See how it's range and accuracy compares to the 10/22s.

I got a Scorpio EM322 (Chinese made, same action as the Norc NS522). About $200 and more accurate than it deserves to be.
It's also a good classroom gun for students.

They're legitimately 'nice' guns. Local shop has them for sub-$200 too. Miles better than a borken cooey or a jw-series norc

It's copied from an Anschutz 54 action. More accurate than a $200 rifle deserves to be.

Mine works decent , pretty stiff for the first hundred or so rounds , but it’s fairly accurate for el cheapo gun

I was interested in one of these as a cheap beater rifle but heard they suck. One review said the bolt comes right out when racking another round, and a lot of bad things to say about the safety

I got a norinco a few weeks ago. It wouldn't shoot, it wasn't striking hard enough. Tried multiple different ammo.
I took it back (gun store employee was pissy I brought it in instead of emailing, but fuck that, I'm not waiting around to get dicked around for weeks or months for a 200 dollar rifle.)
I brought it in with a cable lock, mag and bolt removed. I told them it wasn't firing, told them it was the bolt. He didn't want to check it and ended up giving me a new one, which shoots fine.
Threw a cheap amazon sight on it and it is fine. Shoots straight.

Theyre cheap for a reason, I just got a bad one off the hop, the guy i dealt with made it seem like he was doing me a favor by giving me a working gun in exchange for a faulty one.

I have the 13" version of the JW15. A bit rough in finishing (Dremel and compound or light filing on a can smooth out, functions without, but some stiffness in areas like the safety lever) and needs a deep cleaning from the packing oil/grease when new, and see if you can buy in person as the sights are known to be crooked in some instances, but a great value if you are willing to treat it as a low cost project gun vs. an out of box ready gun for 3x the price. I have more money in the scope and rings than the gun now, but still feel like it was a steal. Norinco is like that generally. If you just want a smooth experience on your first .22, you may want to go with something like the Cooey.

The Cooey can be a good shooter for the price. Its action can be a bit finicky when feeding ammo from the tube but you will figure out the rhythm working the bolt after a while.
Depending where the stock is cracked you can practice some basic wood repair with some wood glue and maybe a screw.
A wonderful piece of Canadiana.

I picked up a savage 64FXP from cabelas for $260 but it also came with a scope. Rn it’s $320 but has a $25 rebate. Scope alone makes it worth it imo over these imo.

I've yet to see a 10/22 for 300. Most I come across are 500-600. A few 400. Right now just looking for a dirt cheap bolt action. That is a fair point on their reliability. I should probably do more research on the 10/22

During sales (Christmas, Black Friday) you can get some good deals. I got a 10/22 with scope and case for $320 last year.

I have that exact Cooey Model 60 in your 2nd pic. More beat up than that one but still works fine.

As accurate as my eye is I guess. Pretty simple sights but good enough to hit pop cans at 50 yds. Where I'm at in northern Alberta we got no gophers like down south and I don't want to be shooting the crows, ravens and magpies just for target practise tho I have taken a few for their feathers for fly tying and dressing up jigs.
I've never gone hunting and might just join a local fish and game club that has a range and skeet shooting area with various competitions during the warmer months. 3ft of snow out there now. Maybe I can find an old fart like me that likes to head out at noon and find a deer not too far off the road. Someone experienced in field dressing an animal I can learn from in case finding food becomes a necessity in the near future.
I just started cleaning up that old Cooey recently. It came with the house I bought just over 22 years ago along with a little Brazilian made single shot 16 gauge originally from Sears. I need to find out what type of stain and varnish was used on the stock to get it as original looking as I can. I'll try refinishing the rest of the gun and if that goes well do my .303 too. I just had my 10/22 and a 1942 No4 Mk1 Lee Enfield .303 I got in '77 for $60 cab fare a guy couldn't pay. Big sack of ammo with it too.
These 10/22s are a fun little gun and can be very accurate. The scope I just put on my new one was only $50 and new in the box. Cheap Chinese one made for nothing heavier than a .22 and is 3-12X42 with front parallax correction and lighted reticle. Flip up lens covers, and a 1-piece scope ring setup that won't work but I had some that do. I may upgrade down the road but if it works OK then maybe not.
Just don't buy that cheap Bucket-O-Bullets bulk ammo and expect to be punching out bulls-eyes at 100yds. Standard ammo like CIL, Winchester etc are pretty good and very consistent tho for a few bux more you can get better stuff. I've been shooting some German made Pistol Match Grade stuff I got a 500rd brick of on sale for less than cheap bulk ammo. Wish I'd bought the half dozen or so they had left.
Pro tips: Don't put loose .22 rounds in your pocket. Most have a wax coating that will pick up lint and sand and muck up your barrel. And don't scrub out your barrel often. Get a bore snake to clean the loose carbon out and save the nice wax coating in there that helps accuracy once the barrel is conditioned. And get a nylon brush instead of a brass one for when you do feel the need to scrub it out.

If it’s a choice between the norinco and the cooey, I would pick the cooey any day. The model 60/600 are still awesome .22’s today. Both in price, and accuracy. It’s also nice to buy one and load it up with 15 + 1 .22 short. If you are just blasting cans it wouldn’t matter much anyways. You can find them in good condition for $230-300 these days. I inherited a model 600, and bought a model 60 online. Think I paid around $260 shipped.

I went with the NR15. Cycles smooth, safety works, mags functioned well with shorts and longs. Came with the 500 rounds of ammo as well. Happy with purchase.

Hard pass on both; questionable whether they'll function at all. I've had norks, and cooeys.... the savings are NOT worth is. They're not fun in the slightest. Awkward, stiff actions that grate and bind and feel like there's sand in them, sloppy triggers with a mile of creep and a gritty 'edge', sights are trash.
For an extra $50 or so you can start to find much better 22's on the used listings that'll be much less disappointing. Savage/Cooey Mark 2, for example. Or a mossberg. Or marlin. Really, basically anything is going to be better than the two you listed; it's difficult to find a worse gun

Yeah, you're basically throwing away money IMO. I was almost embarrassed to sell mine off - but the buyer seemed okay with it.
I don't think they're dangerous to the user, at least

The cooey is 1000% better quality than that shitty norinco. Ammo is cheap to buy bulk, don't fall for the norinco trap.

Unfortunately, trust me I love having fun with cheap guns as I believe this sport doesn’t require spending the most amount of money but holy this thing literally fell apart before getting it to the range and now is completely unusable. Think the ammo will be okay though

Front sight fell off taking it out of the bag, the range adjustment portion fell off just by adjusting it once. Took the bolt apart to clean it and the safety broke so makes the gun completely unusable. Contacted Tenda and never got a message back

The JW-15 is a great gun. They are a cz452 copy, which is a rough action (both CZ and the copies), but they can be polished up and smoothed out with a bit of work.
