How often do you get out to shoot?

It’s winter right now but I’ve been lucky enough to get out once a week. Just bought 1000 rounds of 223. I want to get either a semi auto 223. Either the Alcor or the new backland hunter elite. I know there are lots of bad reviews about both but those are what we have to choose from. I think the backland hunter elite has a fix for lots of the problems with the original.

One good thing about buying so many guns, I am getting good at pulling guns apart and learning the mechanics. Thank god for YouTube. I didn’t realize when I started this that I was going to love it so much. Everyone I meet at the range has been so helpful. They are happy to answer questions and give suggestions. Outside of the Reddit trolls, everyone is super supportive.

My first gun was the Tikka… I wish I would have got it in 308. Should have bought a cheaper 223..

Yeah, it’s the ADHD. When I get into something, I REALLY get into it. I am definitely blowing through the ammo though. That’s why my 2 favourite rifles are 223. Cheap ammo.

Honestly I only use 2 regrets. Tikka t3x should not have been in 223. Should have got it in 308 and bought a cheap 223 rifle.

Also the space cowboy 357. Wood furniture is way more comfortable to actually shoot with. It looks cool though.

that's what I mean - 3 months in, you don't really know what you like/dislike, and are buying based on appearance and imagination only. Make friends at the range, try different things, and zero in on what you like. I do remember first getting into things. I bought a bunch of guns in short order. Most were poorly-considered mistakes, and ended up getting sold off as I decided on quality over quantity. Likewise with ammo - you don't need a million rounds. Especially if you decide to get into serious target work. Who cares if you have a thousand cheap FMJ's, if you find you're more interested in shooting targets at long range? Get better, more accurate ammo, and only shoot until your barrel gets warm. A hundred rounds will last all day.

I like my Tikka Tactical 223 - it's a faster twist, and can shoot long-range 75+gr bullets if you want to hammer some gongs out at moderate to long range.

Would recommend a 6.5 creed instead of that 308, though for target work. It's the best thing that's happened to long range shooting - until it came out, there was not really a lot of options for off-the-shelf long range ammo. It was all handloader/custom made stuff. The 6.5 is specifically made for long ranges. Strange that it's gotten so popular, as it really is a niche use case, but I won't complain. I think it's more marketed to average hunters who imagine themselves to be thousand-yard deadeyes with their sporter-weight rigs. Whatever the reason it's true bloodlines are authentically precision oriented. And I could get ammo at Canadian Tire, too.

Ya I doubt I’m going to compete. I like cheap ammo and large quantities. 308 is easy to come by. I like blowing through ammo so cheaper is better. I think everyone should have a large stockpile of their favourite ammo just in case.

Also I would say from my choices, I don’t have too many poorly considered mistakes. If my biggest “mistake” is that I wish I had bought a larger calibre Tikka, that’s not really that bad. It is a great gun for learning how to shoot. Need to buy a longer range scope now. 😁 can’t wait to start hitting longer range targets. Learning to shoot 500-1000 yard shots is going to be fun. I need a mentor. Learning from YouTube is fine but real world teaching would be an asset.

Thanks for sticking up for me but it’s ok. For how busy I am, I actually get out shooting more than most people in this sub I think considering it’s winter time and I only have an outdoor range to use. Weather has been the only factor holding me back.
