The bill makes important changes to Section 34 of the Criminal Code so that force is presumed to be justified if used against an illegal intruder. Conservatives first announced the ‘Stand on Guard’ principle back in August, asking the government to introduce legislation in the fall session.

It'd be nice if people weren't punished for making split second decisions when it comes to defending themselves, their families and their property.

ESPECIALLY since the people who are (theoretically) trained to do just this are so often allowed to oopsie, I was scared out of consequences.

The punishments between police/civillian are ass backwards.

It's always baffling to me hearing people decry this stuff or push against it when they're in their comfy armchairs.

Tune would change real quick if they it was them in the hot-seat.

Agreed. As someone who has had their place broken into (not while there) it fucks with you. What if I, or my family, was home? Are they coming back? Did they take anything with my personal info on it? What else do I need to worry about, on top of the regular day to day shit I have on my mind?

Even with camera footage I got the run around. It was even suggested that the footage wouldn't be admissible in court because I didn't have signage up saying my own personal property was under surveillance. My stuff, and the intruder, were never found.

Most of the vocal folks against this kind of legislation haven't been a victim, or they become super vague about it when pressed. They do not know what it is like to have to live like that, and I was relatively lucky. But you still feel violated. I still check my cameras multiple times a day when I'm at work and the house is empty.

That level of thoughtfulness is reserved for paid, trained police, who in the heat of theoment may have violently overreacted.

I guess positive target identification and knowing what's behind it is something only civilians need to worry about.
