News / Politics / Activism Saskatchewan Proposed Gun Buyback law -- how do I bring this to my province?

I love Runkle's synopsis of the proposed law in Saskatchewan (and how they are handling things). How do I convince the premier of my province (Ontario) to do the same?

Writing letters has never worked in the past. Is perhaps naming them on twitter or some other form of social pressure a method of making them take notice?

I hope this doesn’t come off as hopium but what Alberta and Saskatchewan are doing is protecting Ontario and the rest of the country.

Essentially they are turning this buyback into a patch work system, federal law is applied universally in Canada and now it’s not. How can you enforce, arrest and confiscate when other parts of the country are not going to be subject to that.

How can you penalize people who can’t comply and penalize others who only because you have a different address.

Imagine demented chipmunk saying “okay Alberta and Saskatchewan are exempt from prosecution, but we will be prosecuting Ontarians.”

So they’re going to have to figure something out or accept that federal law is simply not followed depending on your address.

👏

I can't believe the number of outraged yokels who don't understand that what MB and SK are doing is malicious compliance.

Hold the line (and your eh-arrhs)!

AB and SK, not MB and SK.

While Wab Kinew has stated that the confiscation scheme is not a priority for the Manitoba government, he has not put in any legislative roadblocks like the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan have.

Libs don’t know much about the west.

I think at the end of the day, the path of least resistance for the Liberals is just going to be to kick the can down the road.

I don't really think most people would get too up in arms about a law being enforced in Ontario but not Alberta, unless it's a law that affects them personally, but imagine, if you will, how many older folk there are right now, blissfully unaware that one of their previously-NR weapons is now prohibited, and how it would look to the broader voter base if every week two or three more of them are hauled in front of a court and given sentences. That's not something that would win the Liberals the political points they seem to be after.

And nevermind that even if they aren't as sympathetic, trying to enforce those laws against potentially.. What, some two hundred thousand normal people or so? -That's not a good look either.

And then on the other hand.. Who in Canada is particularly passionate about being anti-gun? Sure, the population is generally in support of more controls on firearms, but for the vast, vast majority of Canadians it isn't something they're up in arms about.

I think it's just going to be much, much easier for the Liberals to quietly do nothing when October comes around, and push amnesty back by another few years. -Though if they do that I feel like they might also try and keep favour with Quebec by adding a few more guns to the prohibited list, most probably the SKS in some form or another, because they know that until they actually have to enforce the ban, no Canadian who doesn't own firearms will really care that they've effectively just prevented the sale or sporting / hunting use of a type of firearm, without actually removing any of them from circulation.

7

u/FenderFanatic Mar 12 '26

The big issue with the sks is that if they add it to the prohibited list then they are criminalizing the number 1 gun used for hunting by the indigenous community and that is an awful look they don't want to have on their reputation. I don't believe they will ever be able to ban the sks without massive push back from indigenous communities. Furthermore an indigenous exemption would be ridiculous.

3

u/prosper_0 Mar 12 '26

would be ridiculous.

That has never once been a consideration than any politician has ever considered. Hell, the entire system south of the border is entirely based on ridiculousness right now

2

u/FenderFanatic Mar 12 '26

I'm convinced the entire system inside of any border is ridiculous currently.

1

u/coffeeofwar Mar 12 '26

Yea that's the thing it will be a huge political fallout when people in droves start being convinced of non restricted they didn't know where prohibited it will be interesting that's for sure

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 Mar 11 '26

In some sense, these new rules will create a two tier system, it's better if the bans were rolled back completely.

4

u/swift_gilford Mar 12 '26

How do I convince the premier of my province (Ontario) to do the same?

It probably won't amount to much, but better than nothing - reach out to Ford - tell him you want the same here otherwise you will consider him complicit in the Liberals plans and as such consider him a member of the LPC of Canada forward and you will drop support.

Realistically - this is what every Ontario gun owner should be doing.

5

u/boozefiend3000 Mar 12 '26

You don’t. Ford isn’t doing shit to help us

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 11 '26

Move to Alberta.

10

u/Moist-Wolverine-8531 Mar 12 '26

Can I move just my guns to AB? Mike in Canmore said he'll act as my trustee.

1

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 12 '26

I could "take care" of them for you. 😂 Actually, my safe if quite full athe moment. Sorry.

-2

u/mischling2543 Mar 12 '26

Alberta is so crowded and overpriced though

3

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 12 '26

Compared to what?

1

u/mischling2543 Mar 12 '26

Everywhere other than southern Ontario and the lower mainland

2

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 12 '26

Which is 80% of Canada's nonAlberta population!

-1

u/mischling2543 Mar 12 '26

More like 40% lol check your math bro

3

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 12 '26

I just did the math. It's 67%

2

u/mischling2543 Mar 12 '26

Canada's current population is 40 million. Less Alberta's 4 million (as of the last census), 36 million.

Ontario is 14m, BC is 5m, together 19m, less ~1.5m for northern Ontario and northern/interior BC = 17.5m

17.5m/36m = 48.6%.

...and I'm just now realizing you're meming with that 67, fuck me lmao

1

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 12 '26

You forgot to subtract the population of Alberta. And I used the Windsor Quebec city corridor (50% of Canadians total population).

1

u/mischling2543 Mar 12 '26

Oh so you weren't meming? Lol ok then:

  1. Yes I did, that's literally the first thing I did.

  2. Windsor to Quebec City is completely different from what I said. I specifically said southern Ontario and not the corridor because I've lived in the Quebec half and it's way more affordable than Alberta.

Show up at a Ford family function with a fat envelope.

6

u/TescoValueSoup Mar 11 '26

Doug Ford is a liberal, and will do his upmost to torpedo anything big C conservatives care about - so there's your answer.

You don't.

34

u/LongRoadNorth Mar 11 '26

Just because he's not a far right conservative doesn't mean he's a liberal.

He's definitely not a liberal when there's rumors he's eyeing federal conservative run. Or when he's cutting OSAP and healthcare all over the place.

He's said he's against the buyback but I doubt he'd do much more for us.

Geez - you DO NOT want the alternative to Doug Ford to be in power. The provincial Liberals were terrible for Ontario in ways the Federal Liberals WISH they could get away with. Doug is the best option.

4

u/LongRoadNorth Mar 11 '26

I agree except for the healthcare side. I'm a firm believer in universal healthcare as a human right.

I know this sub will hate to hear this but even Carney is a fake liberal. He might be socially a liberal but he's seeming more and more like a fiscal conservative

9

u/mdl686 Mar 12 '26

a fiscal conservative running a 70 billion dollar deficit. ok

9

u/mdl686 Mar 11 '26

Hes worse than a liberal, Hes a Red Tory. The only time he act conservative is when he runs his mouth followed by zero action.

10

u/LongRoadNorth Mar 11 '26

He's not worse than a liberal. He's just a typical politician.

I know this sub praises the conservatives but they're all a bunch of lying turncoat pieces of shit.

Even if Pierre won or any conservative they'll fucking back track on so much shit just like any politician.

u/VanillaHighlights Mar 11 '26

"Dougie isn't the totalitarian I want, so he HAS TO be liberal 😡"

You people are exhausting.

7

u/thisghy Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

Big C Conservatives are not totalitarian. Ridiculous. Also ironic coming from a complacent bootlicker that votes for the party currently stripping away freedoms.

0

u/VanillaHighlights Mar 11 '26

I didn't vote liberal, we aren't a two party state.

9

u/thisghy Mar 11 '26

Every left wing party as well as the bloc (basically left wing too) has been supporting the liberals over the past 10 years.

1

u/prosper_0 Mar 12 '26

It's hard to characterize the Bloc. They're not truly left, or right. They're very mercenary, siding with whoever is paying the most. If anything, I'd say they have a pretty authoritarian bent, wanting power, influence, and control more than any particular agenda. They're not anyone's friend, not even their own constituents

-3

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

Conservatism, at its core is an authoritarian ideology. It has to be in order to enforce its ideological beliefs on the population, controlling how people live. Just look at Quebec, its the poster child for conservative ideology when it comes to preserving their heritage and traditions, and they have to take an authoritarian stance on language and religion to do so. Now before you go hollering about the Liberals, yes, the current Liberal party also has authoritarian goals, but being authoritarian is very much against traditional liberalism.

4

u/mdl686 Mar 12 '26

Conservatuives arent policing speech, confiscating private property, or telling people what to drive. Bullshit oly sci definitions arent relevant. The actions of the current parties on offer are. ATM Liberals/NDP make up the bulk of modern canadian authoritarian political ideologys.

1

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

They're litterally banning books

4

u/arm_flailing Mar 12 '26

The Liberal Party of Canada, through their May 2020 and follow-on OICs banned (prohibited) the sale, purchase, use, and possession of thousands of previously-legal long guns. In which Canadian jurisdiction are Conservative-aligned governments banning (prohibiting) the sale, purchase, use, and possession of books? Removing books from public school libraries is not a ban, as those books remain legally accessible and readable through other sellers.

1

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

I'm sorry but various conservative governments in Canada have made it pretty clear that they don't support individual freedoms or the wellbeing of the average Canadian through their attacks on minority groups, lgbtq individuals, healthcare, social safety nets, and sensorship. Again, this isn't an endorsement for the LPC, they don't follow liberal beliefs either for the most part.

2

u/arm_flailing Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

That's a lot of words to say that you don't have an example to substantiate your previous comment of "They're literally banning books".

Regarding healthcare, which party mandated Canadians undergo medical procedures, going so far as to coerce compliance under threat of unemployment? Which party infringed on individual freedoms through their unjustified invocation of the Emergency Act? Which party has flooded Canada with immigrants from anti-LGBTQ cultures?

1

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

Alberta banning books is limiting free speach. Covid mandates were enforced provincially, so take your pick. The emergencies act was horrible to use. Harper started the expansion of the TFW program and increasing immigration. Also see my initial disclaimer of the LPC not being liberal since you can't seem to differentiate between Party and Theology.

"Oh but that's the UCP, it's not all Conservatives."

9

u/thisghy Mar 11 '26

That just isnt true at all.

Conservatism is a political and social philosophy that emphasizes the preservation of traditional institutions, practices, and values.  It advocates for gradual change rather than radical reform, favoring stability, continuity, and the wisdom accumulated over time through established customs and hierarchies.

Key principles of conservatism include:

Respect for tradition: Belief in the value of long-standing institutions such as the family, religion, the rule of law, and national identity.

Skepticism of rapid change: A cautious approach to innovation, grounded in the idea that sudden transformation can disrupt social order and lead to unintended consequences.

Preference for organic society: Viewing society as a complex, interdependent system that evolves naturally, rather than as a construct to be redesigned through abstract ideals.

Support for limited government: Advocacy for minimal state intervention in personal and economic life, promoting individual responsibility and free markets.

3

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

Okay so how do they enforce the preservation of traditional values?

-1

u/thisghy Mar 12 '26

Oh I dont know, dont trample all over them and replace them with radical left wing ideology? Might be a good start.

Do you live under a rock?

3

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

By trampling all over peoples individual freedom of choice instead, so much better. Lol

0

u/thisghy Mar 12 '26

Except that the conservative party is pro choice so you have nothing.

2

u/__WayDown Mar 12 '26

How many times can conservatives lie about this?

From their policy declaration:

On issues of moral conscience, such as abortion, the definition of marriage, and euthanasia, the Conservative Party acknowledges the diversity of deeply-held personal convictions among individual party members and the right of Members of Parliament to adopt positions in consultation with their constituents and to vote freely.

If you believe that this means that the CPC is pro-choice, you wouldn't pass fifth grade language arts.

Huh, really? And the liberal government that we've had has really been the champion of person liberties haven't they? What sub are we on again? Last I checked our personal property rights are being stripped away, which is just one among a myriad of other things that this government has done to stamp out liberty.

3

u/specificallyrelative Mar 12 '26

How is less government control and more of the population running things in any way authoritarian? Thats the opposite. Now Liberalism, with its habit of making everything they can government run and stomping on the rights of citizens os more aligned with authoritarianism and fascism.

2

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

More power to the population is literally a liberal tennants, not conservative. Conservatism demands that power is consolidated in the government, the church, or the ruling class. Liberalism expects the government to use its power at the behest of people, not against them. Google classical liberalism if you want to learn more.

5

u/specificallyrelative Mar 12 '26

Look at modern liberalism in reality. They abuse their power to consolidate authority in their government and present legislation to limit ones rights and freedoms. Just look at the invocation of the emergencies act, which several judges have deemed improper and against the rights of citizens.

3

u/CallMeSirJack Mar 12 '26

The LPCs Neo Liberalism is about as far from classical liberalism as conservatism is, its a bastardization of an ideology that supported personal freedoms and social wellbeing, and polluted it with politically correct bullshit and corporate funded special interests while soap boxing about being better.

2

u/specificallyrelative Mar 12 '26

So Classic Liberalism is dead. What those who are fanisizing about days gone by are being douped into voting for is modern Liberalism. Like you said, it's a bastardized construct that takes rights and freedoms from the people in favour of more government controls, all under the false claim of protecting us.

Hello 👋 not hiding.

I’m pro funding healthcare, pro funding education.

I vote orange party normally because of those ideals.

Me loving my guns doesn’t have any bearing on those other issues.

You can love guns and be on any side of the political spectrum because guns totally independent of the other items which influence people’s political views such as funding health care or education for example.

11

u/VanillaHighlights Mar 11 '26

I'm a left leaning gun-owner. I'm very blatant not to hide it?

Oh, you meant liberals like the America wannabes call it.

Nobody bows down to Pierre or anyone leading the CPC for that matter. Why do you people always say things like that? Why are you always painting conservatives as cultists? What is even the point of being a "left-leaning-gun-owner" in Canada? If it's top vs. bottom then surely Carney and Trudeau are richer than Pierre and thus at the very least on the same side as him?

Compromise Conservatives are how we got to where we are.

10

u/DJ_Necrophilia Mar 11 '26

I would argue that being unwilling to compromise is how we got here

2

u/black_covfefe_please Mar 11 '26

No, it is the constant compromise that has gotten us here.

2

u/wmd613 Mar 12 '26

Your best bet is to make a crap load of noise. 1 or 2 letters likely won't do anything. But you, your friends, those at your range, etc start writing every week (even if it's the same letter sent over and over) the volume starts to show the desire for the change.

1

u/grandfundaytoday Mar 12 '26

Take your guns to Saskatchewan - store them there.
