Research historical records of disarmed populations.

It never ends well.

If all you stand to lose from this gun grab is your GSG, consider yourself lucky.

When every person you meet has the chance to be carrying, are you really going to be as much of an asshole to them than if you knew they didn’t?

I left a dictatorship because those in power had all the guns, and were more than willing to turn them on those without.

Never again.

Not weighing in on the disarmed populace, but your last paragraph is a pet peeve of mine.

Tanks can be taken out by a Molotov cocktail or two, they're not the big scary thing people think they are, and are pretty useless in a place like Canada outside of the prairies.

Smaller drones can be (and have been frequently) taken out with shotguns, and large ones require support on the ground or at sea for refuelling and maintenance and can't be replaced nearly as fast, so (especially if we're talking a hypothetical tyrannical Canadian government) rifles could be instrumental in ruining that capability through ground assaults.

On top of all of this, in order to actually dominate a populace, a tyrannical government would have to rely on ground troops, and a GSG is better than nothing for fighting them.
