First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I’m in university and know a lot of obviously liberal students. Most of them go off the assumption that “Peepee” is going to ban women, LGBTQ+, abortions, and minorities. Anyone who leans right is “brainwashed” in their eyes. I have no idea why these seemingly smart people are so easy to trick

What you’re describing isn’t that surprising when you zoom out and look at how powerful narrative control has become (which is funny because the majority of talking points used against the conservatives aren't even true lol).

Mainstream outlets like that get state funding don’t just report politics anymore, they frame it. When the same framing is repeated across television, online headlines, campus discussions, and then amplified through algorithms on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, it becomes the “default reality” for a lot of young people, which is unfortunate.

Politics today isn’t about policy nuance; it’s team sports. Red team vs blue team. If you’re on Team Liberal, then the opposing side isn’t just wrong! They’re evil, regressive, anti-women, anti-LGBTQ, anti-minority. That framing sticks because it’s emotional, not analytical. And once politics becomes moralized like that, dissent equals heresy. Say what you will about the Liberals but they have a stupidly good campaign machine and they've managed to weaponize feelings which is incredible to be frank.

The Liberal Party of Canada has been particularly effective at branding. They’ve tied themselves to identity politics and social virtue in a way that makes opposing them feel like opposing equality itself. On university campuses where social belonging matters a lot that branding is powerful. When professors, student unions, and media all lean the same direction, it reinforces the perception that there’s only one “educated” view, hell we even see it on Reddit, even folks on this sub shy from discussing firearms in real life because it's considered a 'no no' topic even though it shouldn't be.

Hell, let's take a look at a VERY relevant point, the firearms confiscation / buyback. Owners know how fucked it is, but the average joe hears about how Carney is 'getting assault style weapons off the streets' and they think "yeah thats cool". A funny thing I hear all the time is "why are gun owners all so politically charged?" and the answer is always "because we fucking have to be otherwise we get cooked".

It’s not that students / most common folks are unintelligent either. It’s that they’re immersed in an environment where one narrative is socially rewarded and the other is socially punished. That’s a powerful incentive structure. Add in algorithm-driven media bubbles, and you get people who genuinely believe catastrophic things about the other side without ever engaging with primary sources or policy details. Look how many people, even people in this very sub parroting the usual "PP BAD" points but they suddenly shrink away when asked which part of the conservative platform they dislike.

When politics becomes identity plus media echo chambers, you don’t need people to think critically, you just need them to stay loyal to the team and that isn't going to change any time soon. The one redeeming factor is that eventually the tide always turns once quality of life dips low enough, history shows that the pendulum always swings, eventually.

Thats cool and all but little PP literally didnt even have a platform! Marlaina is a fascist. Carney is a financial genius and is signing deals all around the world and our GDP per capita is sky rocketing and theres so many jobs and houses.
