These people are actually convinced that gun laws (and only gun laws) are magical and somehow make guns vanish from thin air, therefore preventing shootings.

This is the fundamental fallacy of the left.

They have so much faith and belief in the state that they literally cannot comprehend disobeying the state. It's the same radical lack of comprehension that turns people into religious extremists, they're just prostrating themselves at the altar of government, not God.
