Newby question about the gun ban.

I was at the gun store the other day looking at various rifles and checked out this gun that was chambered in 9mm and looked like an 'assault rifle' (whatever that is). It had a synthetic stock, aluminum hard guard / rail thingy, box style magazine, etc. The guy told me that "AR pattern" guns had been banned, but not this one.

Presumably (and I might be getting this wrong), the feds banned the AR style guns because they look like an assault rifle... which seems insane... to ban a look, and it's more easy to commit crime... ?

The question that I have is; in terms of committing crime, the gun I held can shoot just as fast as any other semi-auto (as fast as you can pull the trigger). It does just as good a job at committing crime as any other semi-automatic gun. This all seems stupid to me, but I would like to hear their rational. Why did they do this? It seems like some semi-automatic rifles were banned that use the same cartridge and operate identically to ones that haven't been banned. How do they justify this? I know this will bring out the "ahh, because they're idiots" responses, but I'm really interested in knowing if there's a logical explanation for all of this. What am I missing?

Simple, they're using the general public's ignorance to ban guns piece by piece. First fully automatic guns were banned, that didn't stop shootings. Now they banned "scary" looking guns (there's no such thing as an "assault" rifle btw), and this too won't stop shootings. Then they banned handguns, still won't stop shootings. So obviously the next step is to ban most semi automatic guns (bill c-21) and that too will not stop shootings. Eventually they will come for every gun and that too will not stop shootings because criminals will always find a way. However we'll all be left defenseless, unarmed, and at the mercy of the government. So unless something changes it ain't looking pretty.

In an ideal world the government would admit that there is no way to stop all shootings and that millions of legal gun owners shouldn't be punished for the actions of a few criminals, but I'm not holding my hopes up for that.

Obviously law enforcement and/or the military. I come from a post Soviet authoritarian state, you do/say anything the government doesn't like the police take you to jail if you're lucky, if you're unlucky you could even be murdered. Same thing happens in a lot of other countries throughout the world, e.g. China, NK, KSA etc. And in all those countries law enforcement is very willing to the bidding of their masters without so much as a second thought.

I looked at your comment history, since you're a Jewish person I assume you know how German law enforcement at all levels (police, SS) carried out a genocide on your people.

You are correct non practicing half Jew here. It’s idiotic and insulting to assume that Canada could get to 1930s German level tyranny. You strike me as just the type of person who shouldn’t have firearms.. I don’t mean to offend but you just admitted your guns will defend you from police that you deem are enforcing government tyranny. Canada is far from tyrannical.. This is just the type of nonsense I hear from chuds in America. Shame on you. Even if you are “right” you just admitted to your intentions online like a real smooth brain.. People like you are gonna get guns banned for all of us who just wanna target shoot or hunt smh

Unfortunately you're wrong, Germany in the 1930s was one of the most advanced and civilized nations on earth and they ended up democratically electing a tyrant. And their DNA isn't any different than our DNA or anyone else's, the hunger for absolute power is human nature, hence why you need a system of checks and balances. As for my ideas yes I am still free to express them and there's nothing to be ashamed about.

Plus it's not like this is anything groundbreaking lol, this is the exact reason why the second amendment exists in the US and used to be common knowledge (fortunately still is in some parts). Sadly a lot of people these days don't read history as closely as they should to learn lessons from it.

I agree with you 100% dude, clearly the person you're responding to knows nothing about history.

"The government we have currently isn't rounding people up therefore we can never become that in the future" is a very dumb view in light of what's happened less than a century ago. Hell, we had literal segregation, career loss, and bans on travel for a group of people in this country just over a year ago with well over 70% of the population and entire media cheering it on.

People who think "we as humans can never do that again" are the most naive fools society has to offer.
