Total newb question: what do you all recommend for ear protection?

I just got my membership accepted at a local range and can finally start shooting! I’m looking to get 2x pairs (one for me, one for guests).

I see Canadian Tire sells some for $20 to $40. Are those ok for beginners? I don’t want to break the bank dropping $150 x2 for some amazing noise-cancelling ones. I also want to protect my hearing properly.

EDIT: if relevant, I’ll be shooting .22 rimfire, 30-30, and 12 gauge to start.

Start with foam ear plugs and a YouTube instruction video.

I bought my 3M hearing protection a Cantire when they were on sale. A few Cantire products are just fine.

Hearing loss is cumulative - being new or a beginner you should spend buying the best equipment you feel your health is worth, verses upgrading at a later date - buy once, cry once. The cheaper solution and one I'd always do irrespective of the ear pro I owned if shooting indoors is doubling up. Personally I don't like the sensory loss of doubling up outdoors so I own modified Sordins.

Earplugs are cheap and suitable to begin with, just make sure you are putting them in properly or it won’t form a proper seal. Once you feel like spending money look at Walker electronic earmuffs, they amplify sounds so you can talk to your buddy across the shooting bay but it’ll cut off when you’re shooting
