is it a precursor to total ban

It's all speculation, but I would assume that almost certainly yes, the Liberals will do a total ban sometime down the line if the freeze remains in place. They always like to come back to guns, and they're always looking for new gun control to campaign on.

or it might be reversed ??

Fortunately, yes, and I think this is the more likely outcome. The Liberals have already been in power for almost a decade and are looking weak. Historically, they won't be in power much longer. Repealing the freeze is part of the Conservative platform, so I don't expect it will last more than a couple of years.
