Yes, overkill for deer. Look for a light fast caliber for deer. .270 win has become quite popular.

Technically it's for moose and elk. I have a 30-30 for deer

For moose and elk it is fine. While I wouldn't call it overkill, it is more than you need. The more cost effective 308 or 30-06 is plenty. People even hunt moose with 7.62x39 (probably a little on the low side, but it is done).
