Question regarding storage of a restricted pistol… if I have a trigger lock on and keep the pistol in my safe, does the pistol need to also be in the hard case it came in while in the safe? Or can I leave the pistol out on its own outside of the case?

Previous responses are correct. I just want to add that the government has been saying that they will soon be announcing further regulatory changes to “strengthen” the current storage laws. I recently bought my first restricted guns and I’m planning to buy a safe, but since we don’t know what the new regs will be (possibly setting standards for what constitutes a safe—metal thickness, etc), I’ve been holding off for now and just using a regular locking case.

Presumably not, but we don’t know what specific changes they will be making to the storage rules. It might not have anything to do with safes.

If the handgun is in the safe it doesn't need to be trigger locked or in a second locked container.

Thanks for the response and great to know. Do you by chance know if ammo stored in the same safe changes anything?

To clarify

A) Gun does not require trigger lock when in safe.

B) Ammo can be in safe with firearms. You can even have loaded magazines right next to said firearm (But not inside of)

C) Contrary to what Remms stated, if you have a pistol legally stored in a hard case outside of a safe (with trigger lock, case also locked) ammo can be stored inside of the case, and same deal again with loaded magazines.)

Pretty sure it can be stored in the safe with the firearm. In locked container ammunition cannot be present

To add, restricted don’t need to be trigger locked if in a safe BUT since the definition of what constitutes a suitable safe isn’t defined yet, it is a VERY good idea to keep a trigger lock on them in the “safe”.

Whatever you are using as a safe should be at least suitable for transport requirements so with the trigger lock in place it removes any questioning about whether your safe is a “good enough” safe.

Same with transporting non-restricteds. They don’t need to be locked in transport, but they do need to be trigger locked in storage (if not in a case or suitable room). Might as well slap a trigger lock on for transport so that if you leave them in your car for longer than you should you will have met the storage requirements also.

Slightly overkill but really not that much of a hassle. The risk to reward ratio on it is unbeatable so I do it.

I agree, I fully intend on keeping my trigger locks on at all times but just wasn’t sure if I can keep it outside the physical case I use to bring to the range while within the safe. Seems like I have my answer. Cheers!
