Anyone have any recommendations for models or brands for a person who is new to the hobby of collecting and target shooting?

I'd like to start off with something that isn't going to be overpowered for a newbie, but also hopefully something that will remain useful throughout my life as a hobby target shooting weapon.

​

I'm open to just about anything, although for target shooting I'm not so sure that I'll ever end up with a shotgun - probably just rifles and if I'm lucky handguns.

A Ruger 10/22 is a good start off rifle that should last and doesnt have a huge price tag

I read the same recommendation for a first firearm some years ago and wish I got one then. Prices only go up. I'm happy with my alternative 22 rifle (Rem 597) but the 10/22 receiver has a big aftermarket, allows a bit of modularity so you can have different styles of the same gun, with new goodies to buy and add to your rifle, even years on. Good pick.

I don't have a budget in mind, I would like to get something that will be decent for a beginner but won't end up being useless as I become more experienced.

I'm thinking .308, possibly, in case I do decide to take up deer hunting, although I don't know if that would be a difficult starting calibre. As for action, I'd be fine with anything as my main intended use is target shooting, but like with calibre, I'd want to be sure it's something that I won't grow out of, so if there's any suggestion you'd make there I'm all ears.

If you haven't already, buy a handgun today! Could be your last day to have the option. Buy online and then call the retailer tomorrow morning and make sure they start the transfer today in the system, get the reference number. As for what to buy, I suggest a 9mm 😎
