Got my rpal two weeks ago and made two different purchases. With the given backlog, what is the next step I’m waiting for? I know I’ll be given a transfer number. Does this come from the store or the rcmp?

The RCMP will email you a Buyer Transfer Notification, and they email the store a Seller Transfer Notification. The store may contact you when they receive their Seller Transfer Notification letting you know the firearm is ready to be picked up.

If you want to check on the status of your transfer, you can contact the seller and ask for the reference number on their transfer application, and then you can call your CFO with that number to check the status. I would advise against this - in Ontario, the CFO is overwhelmed and months behind on transfers. We were told during our range and store inspection that the office has a very small staff that normally processes about 60 transfers per day. They received about 20,000 transfer requests in about 10 days, which is over a year's worth. Currently, they are "all hands on deck" and able to process up to around 300 per day, but even at that level, if they are hitting that max number every day, would require over 60 business days (Monday - Friday, so 12 weeks/3 months) minimum to process the transfers just from the first 2 weeks of June.

You will spend hours trying to get through on the phone, and if you can manage to get through, will be told something along the lines of "we're working on it, it will be a few weeks."

When you get your transfer, you can take the gun home. You won't be able to take it to the range to shoot until you get your new updated RPAL with ATT conditions attached (your current license does not have these conditions attached, the ATT is issued when you register your first Restricted firearm), and the Registration Certificate for your firearm. These will come after you receive the transfer, and I couldn't even begin to guess how long that will take right now.

tl;dr - If you're in Ontario, your next step is monk-like patience.

The store should have provided the reference numbers for the transfers. Now you just wait. Two months+ for me so far. Then the CFP will email you the info and tell you to go pick up the gun.

You won't necessarily 'be given' the transfer number. It's not part of the official process and it varies from shop to shop whether they'll send it unsolicited.

Thanks. I haven’t heard a peep from either shop and it’s been two weeks. Kind of assumed this but wasn’t sure. I’ll just hang tight for a couple months and wait for the transfer.

If you really want the transfer number you can email/call them and ask for it, but some shops don't automatically give it to you. I had to email my LGS and ask for mine.

I purchased a restricted firearm 2 weeks ago and the store didn't give me a reference number. However, if you call your province's CFO, all you need to provide is your personal/license information and they will be able to track down the status of your transfer.

I called the BC CFO a few days ago and they said transfer approvals are currently 4-6 weeks out.

If they have your email address on file, you will get an email saying your transfer has been processed and that you can now take your firearm home with you. Then you just have to wait for the registration certificate in the mail before you can take it to the range.
