I like to use a heat gun on the stock (carefully, because it's easy to scorch the wood) to bleed out the cosmoline so it can be mopped up with shop towels.

There's not going to be much you can do to shine up the metal that would actually be worth it

Trigger does nothing: was the safety off? Was the hammer cocked and the bolt fully forward and closed?

No worries, everyone had to stay somewhere. If it is held all the way open: When the magazine is empty it should push the bolt hold open up to hold the bolt open. If that's what's doing it you can open the magazine release to pop the mag down then pull the bolt back and the bolt hold open will release and the bolt can go forward

Put it in a black garbage bag and leave it in othe sun while you lay back and relax. I used global warming to melt my cosmo out. Take your bolt out and put it in a separate bag. Hopefully that does the trick for you.
