I'm trying to sell a restricted firearm online right now. I have someone who wants to pay half now and then pay the other half when the transfer is approved. I know it's best to take the full payment first but there is quite a bit of money at stake so I understand where they are coming from. Just wondering what would happen if the transfer is approved and then he doesn't pay the rest. Could I just transfer it back? Or hold out on shipping till it's payed?

Don't do it. Find another buyer if he won't budg. It is very standard to take full payment. Why would the transfer not be accepted anyway? It is a crazy notion.

Once transferred the gun is theirs, full payment up front. Tell them to use a credit card if they don't trust you or PayPal.

INAL, my guess is just that you'd probably have to mail them the firearm they own according to the registry (at least just the serialized part) and then take them to court for the rest of their contract. So if you do go through with it, at least make sure it's in writing.
