Hey folks, newbie here. Just completed my safety course last week and iam now going over the PAL application form.... the history section asks about a youth record and conditional discharges etc. My issue is I had an assault charge as a youth (school yard fight) approximately 18 years ago and a B&E charge at 18 years old which was granted a conditional discharge 16 years ago. I dont have a criminal record... no tickets not even a speeding ticket. Young and stupid i guess. My current job required a background check. I got my background check and my record is clear. Its was so long ago i dont remember specific dates or even what the conditions where. I dont wanna fill this out wrong and prolong my waiting period or better yet have to redo the form but i have no idea how iam suppose to access the details on this stuff? Especially when my record appears to be cleared. Would the RCMP have this info still? Any help is appreciated .

Horse police would have this info. I would suggest putting down everything to the best of your knowledge but note on your application these are best guesses (I'm assuming timeline is the issue). They'll have the correct info. Don't omit anything.

"Young and stupid" You should rethink that if asked as no shortage of "older and stupid" This isn't something that'll win you points, own it. "Poor behaviour/judgement, lesson learned"

Answer truthfully. In terms of your criminal charges, parrot what your conditional discharge stated. Don't make it an essay. If you don't remember specific dates make approximations. It may take a bit longer for approval when you tick yes on any boxes (6 - 12 months). If you have any further questions DM me and I'd be happy to answer.

Don't forget that you have to write a letter and put your name on the top.

Section 16a and 16e are both very clear in their language.

  1. "Have you ever been charged, convicted or granted a discharge for an offence under the Criminal Code or the Youth Criminal Justice Act where violence was used, threatened or attempted."

  2. "Do you know if you have ever been reported to the police or social services for violence, threatened or attempted violence, or other conflict in your home or elsewhere?"

Based on what you've said, the answer to both is yes. It even specifies that you must answer even if it was discharged. But as far as what details to include, I would recommend you call the CFP and ask them. Just because an employment background check shows nothing, doesn't mean the RCMP don't have records. And if you're caught lying, you might jeopardize your chance of ever getting a PAL.

Thanks for the advice. Ill try and call the CFO and get more information. Im an open book but id like to make sure that im providing everything needed from the start vs later.
