We'd like to get some unrestricted firearms, probably hunting rifles. But, a member of our family has suffered depression before, and we want to keep them safe. Are there any ranges in southern Ontario that can store for you? Will our family member's health history prevent the rest of us from getting licenses? Thanks so much!

Your family member’s heath history has nothing to do with your ability to acquire a firearms license. You would however have a responsibility to ensure your firearms are not used for unintended purposes (i.e. to harm a person).

Lock them up in a safe or room and don’t give them the key or combination. It’s that simple.

If your family member is not licensed it's illegal for them to have access anyway. I would recommend spending the money on a proper gun safe and go above and beyond and put trigger locks on Aswell.

Have they ever been hospitalized or otherwise admitted to a health facility due to their condition?

Have they sought help for their condition from a therapist? Did the dr or therapist say they were In good mental health after treatment?

It the answer to the first question is no, then they’re probably fine to get a license

If the answer is yes to the second, I’d recommend having the dr\ therapist write a letter of good health with their application.

I don’t believe that you can be prevented from getting a license because a family member has a history of depression. Do they live with you? I’ve had a diagnosis after getting my pal and it was no issue when my renewal came up. That’s not to say it may be different with you.

Never hospitalized, but doctor/therapist. They're in the house, which is why I thought it might be a problem. They won't be going for a license, but might want to shoot with our supervision occasionally.
