So I just bought my first handgun (paid and got the transfer started, haven’t heard anything yet though) and I’m not yet part of a range, I am planning on joining but I’m just wondering if it’s a problem to get the transfer approved without being an active member?

If you are in Ontario or Alberta, not a problem, elsewhere, maybe.
