Misc Question about 12 G to 45-70 insert

I bought a couple short sub caliber inserts for my coach gun, some rifled and some smooth bore.

One in particular is a 45-70 smooth bore insert with like an inch or less of actual bore. I know these are meant to be safe but has anybody used them before? It’ll be in a 12 gauge coach with a 12” barrel.

My main concern is, is this round going to tumble wildly striking the barrel before it can escape the muzzle?

Im curious about these too.

Mainly interested in pistol caliber inserts and some 410 inserts for my coach gun, but have been debating a 45-70 but this would be a cheaper way to try out 45-70 for me before dropping the cash on a potential shoulder wrecker I wont shoot enough of. I tore my right rotator cuff back in 2012 in a bad highway wreck so dont really enjoy too heavy recoil these days. Shot some 3" 1 1/4 ox 1800 fps sugs out of it back in the spring and it tool 2 weeks before I could shoot again due to my past injury. Calculator suggested 48 flbs on those slugs after the fact, so nope never again with that gun. No recoil pad, just a steel butt plate on it. Thes slugs are fine in my 12" churchill pump, an 590, and my buddys M4, but break action shotty, nope not doing that again LOL

Yeah it’s crazy the difference in recoil even between a short barrel pump and a break action. They regularly bruise me up if I shoot a lot out of one

Yeah a single shot charles daly 12ga isnt good with those shoulder wrecker slugs. Last time I shoot something ridiculous for shits and giggles!!!!! Was a case of they arent too bad, lets see what happens, sort of like those guys shooting 50BMG single shot pistols down in Texas

If you’re gonna go with the 45-70 I’d try to find a longer one, this one looks a little scary lol

However right now you can get 9mm, 380, 45 auto etc 3” inserts for dirt cheap

Yeah that’s the advantage over long inserts. I have no purpose in it other than a dorky thing I find fun to do … “tasting” every caliber lol .. I’ll try 45-70 eventually once I run out of other things on my list lol

I'll probably try 45-70 this winter when I end up taking my boy to Phonix here in Edmonton. Havent been there in a few yeas as its kind of expensive, but they have all the fun restricted guns and I think they likely still have a bunch of now prohib PCCs, shot all those when they were NR.

Planning on getting some gift certificates for my 16 yearold and I for Christmas so he can shoot whatever he wants. Shot alot of fun stuff last time I was there like 500 remington magnum, 50 cal Desert Eagle, but at $8 a shot its too pricy to shoot the big stuff. I generally go and shoot a few 100 rounds of 45acp and 9mm when I go, maybe some 357 &44mag if the mood hits.

Range fee, and gun rental/ammo gets pricy though. Usually end up dumping $300-500 when I go for an afternoon but its fun.

I’ve got friends with 45-70 and .50AE guns but getting people to come out to the range who aren’t total nerds like myself can be like pulling teeth lol lucky you to have a 16 year old that takes an interest in shooting sports!!

I hear ya, every once in a while Ill get someone to go. Usually ill take a few guns to work up north and get some of my 20-30 year old coworkers shooting in the bush. couple guys never held a gun before being from the UK, and love it now. Both of them are going to get thier PALs this winter and one guy has came out bird hunting with me. I'm letting him use one of my shotguns.

My boys first gun was a daisy red ryder when he was 4, and he was shooting pigeons in my mothers barn since 5. Been taking him actually hunting since 10, and he's shot quite a few grouse and rabbits. Loves my crossbow too, but wants a Compound bow, I dont have time to get proficient with a bow, and worried about my old shouldar injury drawing a legal bow consistently. Working with a sports trainer now to give it a shot so I can hunt deer in bow season, but dont want to buy one if I dont end up being able to use it. So I'll use my boys bow to practice see how it goes and buy my own if I can manage. Hes a big kid at 6'2 165lbs so his bow will fit me as well

I’ve got a collection of 20 different 12Ga adapters. The only ones I have thus far been too scared to try are: .30 carbine, .444 marlin, 45-70 and .450 bushmaster. The “strongest” ones I’ve used are probably 20 GA, .50AE, .44 mag, 10mm. I highly doubt that 45-70 is going to somehow tumble inside of the barrel. The only concern I have is around getting my ass kicked by recoil out of something like a trailhand 10” lol

The pistol caliber ones seem fine, I got two .380 ones for my coach aswell but I’m just a little nervous to send a 45-70 through it.

There’s like 0 barrel on this insert

A buddy of mine has some 12" inserts he had a machinist make for him years ago at work. Has a 30-30, 308, 30-06, 410, 20ga, and a bunch of pistol calibres. Cost him a case of beer for them all, to bad the old machinist fella past away back in 2021 though or Id be seeing about getting a set made. Aparently he had quite the collection that he built starting in the late 60s. Worked into his 70s as he just liked making things.

They are sweet, made from chrome moly axle shaft stock, super hard aloy, doesnt rust, and shiny as the day he got them. has a couple rifle cartrige ones for his 10ga goose gun too. Said he had them made as he seemed to always have the biggest mully bucks show up in his decoy spread and curse himself that he didnt have a rifle with him. Shot a couple nice bucks with them at 30-40 yards through the years.

Had them made about 20 years ago. Doesnt have one for 45-70, and the only friend I know with a 45-70 is in BC north of Kamloops so its a bit of a drive to go try his out

I only shoot indoors, but in my experience the lighter rounds such as rimfire are the ones most prone to tumbling.
