Buy recommendations No room for a safe
I know you only need a SLD for a NR gun but… I want to be cautious as I have kids in the home and visitors often come over
I’m thinking of picking up my first gun (mossberg 590R) and I can’t find any space in my house to fit a safe
any ideas? I know under the bed lock boxes exist but my issue would be that i don’t think i can fit a dehumidifier in there
anyone else been in the same boat? and also obviously i do plan to get a few more guns so I want to plan with that in mind

I have a locking cabinet in the garage, it’s not a “safe” but it works like one… if you have a tool cabinet that’s tall, put a lock on it and bam there’s a safe…
Alternatively, you could get a hard case / pelican case, and then put locks on the case, and trigger lock… shove it in the basement

I thought of the garage idea but I was told humidity will fuck me over

I installed a 40 watt incandescent light bulb in mine on a simple timer , one hr on and two off. Keeps it at a steady dry 70 degrees

I have a small heater in my safe for humidity. Also pretty sure even attached garages arent considered a part of the dwelling legal for firearms storage. I would check it out first.

I've never heard that. Do you have a source?
The big thing would likely be access - if it's in a shared garage, that's an issue. If it's unlocked and the door is open, that is different from a well-built garage with locking doors and all that.
It's also doubtless different if you run a business in your garage or so. But the law says nothing about storage in a dwelling vs. not, just whether it's an individual or business.

If under the bed is all you have then make that work. Big desiccant bags and pop some air holes to make sure the case breathes. A good oiling often will be your best friend. Plus it’s a cheap temporary fix until you find a better solution (if needed)

Or a good hard pelican style gun case that has the breather valve and locks. It'll do double duty as a case for transport if you desire a case while transporting NR. I use a couple for transport as its easier than stacking 4-6 guns in the back seat of my truck to shoot at my buddy's private range in Alberta.
Protects them from rubbing while bouncing down the gravel back roads. My beater pump 12ga just stays behind my seat as I carry it while fishing or working in the foothills logging roads. It gets scratched and scraped but its a cheap Churchill, or my old Mossberg 500 so its a work gun not something in a collection to be kept pristine.
My expensive guns get the fancy cases, and my optics but thats about it for transport. I have two canadian tire cabinates I stuck in my bedroom closet. I pile jeans on top of them and my shirts hung next to them, socks and underwear in a dresser shared with my wife. You can fit a smaller safe/cabinate anywhere if your creative. I even have a 6 gun cabinate in the camper bolted to the floor for when we are traveling western Canada on holidays or hunting trips. Piece of mind when you need to run to town for something and are camping and dont want to load all the guns back into the truck for security. Campers arent hard to break into, neither are cabinates, but the cellular game camera inside the camper will have 6-10 clear photos of thieves sent to my phone the first 30 seconds they come in so they will be easily caught. Espcially since another camera will catch thier plates when comming into our usual bush camps.

Ontario here, trigger locked in soft cases under my bed was what I did for years. All through undergrad and almost 10 years after, until I bought a house. Technically if you have a bolt action you can just remove the bolt, and most break actions you can separate the block and the barrel really easily.
Wasn't a problem for any of the guns that I've had and still use to this day.

I mean, you are you living in Canada. I'm not sure where you are, but here in Alberta, it'd dry enough my safe has never needed a dehumidifier.
An under the bed safe is definitely good. I'd do that!
Otherwise I'd look for room in your closet perhaps?

A 12 gun safe from princess auto or Canadian tire is 1 square foot. Surely you must have a closet or somewhere with enough room to fit one. If you are planning on getting more than one gun just bite the bullet and get one, especially if you have a child in the house.

If it disassembles the same way as the 590, you can remove the trigger assembly and lock that away (it's only the size of your fist). Keep the reminder of the firearm locked up or display it on the wall (it's completely inoperable without that assembly).
Lookup a disassembly video and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Your kids still shouldn't touch the gun without supervision but if they don't listen, they won't kill each other.

I started out with a cheap cabinet in the closet of our spare bedroom. A “16” gun cabinet really only takes up as much room as a dozen hanging shirts.

Pelican case with all foam removed and few dry pouches. Put underneath your bed. I just slide all my guns under my bed and have a digital lock for the room.
But i am a jerk with no kids who don’t want my guests in my bedroom

You may need to get creative. How handy are you? If you have any interior walls with a closet or something directly on the other side of the wall, you could cut out the drywall and set your safe/cabinet inside the hole, flush or slightly proud of the wall. You will probably lose some closet space on the other side of the wall but this may be your best option, if its an option at all.

I have a small safe in my closet and another small one behind spare bedroom door. Also a hard case with a trigger lock under thr bed will work

My friend has some airsoft at home, and he is well aware how his kid might be able to get their hand on it if he is not careful (and he did the same thing when he was young with his dad stash, lol)
He manage to get some school lockers that basically sold for 25 ea, and bought some, good scrunb down and good to go.
If you want to keep firearm in the garage, then I would probably go for safe route, and you should buy a humidity meter to check the humidity and probably a ring camera around for security reason.
Amazon sell those smaller dehumidifier that you can use for like a closet, and that's basically what I have been using.

I lucked out got a 4 locker set for free a few years ago. Still bought a safe but use it to keep other adult stuff away from my teens. And my firework stash.
I tend to stockpile fireworks over the year and do a big show for new years with a few friends. There’s 4-5 of us that stockpile and usually we have enough for a 45min to an hour show out at a buddy’s farm. All the neighbours come for it and the annual bonfire. He collects brush and dead trees cleaning up his place, pallets and scrap lumber all year and lights it on Newyears. It’s usually a pile 30 foot across 15-20 feet high. You can’t get within 50 feet of it once it’s going. But it lights up the sky great for shooting some clays early in the evening.
