Fix my gun / Modding Tm-22 light primer strike issues

Post image

I recently picked up a tm-22 and I really like it the only downside is it’s having a ton of light primer strike issues atleast once or twice a a mag on average I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it without sending it back

The break in period is definitely a long one. At least mine felt like it. It still light strikes with some ammo types but I’ve read online and discovered myself a lot of them just have a type of ammo they will eat no problem. Mine like CCI mini mag 40 gr. They’re a bit more expensive in terms of 22 but worth it in my opinion.

Seconding that CCI mini mag 40 grain has worked flawlessly with mine out of the box. Definitely worth the little extra bit of money.

Put a toonie in buffer tube and the problem might magically disappear

When I get home I plan on doing that and removing the left extractor

Try a loonie as well, a Toonie gives mine failures to feed.

I had to use a degreaser to clean the bolt+rails when I first got it, there was still a bit of gunk left with wiping.

I used a dry lube. When I got mine first, I had no jams with stock mags, but the bolt definitely slid smoother after firing a few times.

Looks like others have mentioned the buffer tube toonie trick.

I'll ask you the basic question, did you clean it when you got it? TM22s come packed pretty greasy.

I just opened it up there was next to no grease in it but I did oil it a bit when I got it

If you run your gun (especially rimfire) before cleaning, you can get some gunky build up because the dirtiness of the round sticks to the packing grease. I'm always a fan of cleaning before shooting when it's a new gun.

I'd suggest busting out the ballistol and giving it a good clean out. And while you're doing that pop the toonie into the buffer tube and grab the extractor out as well.

I did try and get the extractor out, but the pin is stuck in there very well, but I did pop a toonie in while I was inside of it

Also what ammo are you running in it? That many light strikes doesnt seem like an ammo issue so I'd make sure everything is seated correctly.

CCI mini-mag is usually my goto for semis

I used federal,CCI, Norma, eley and a few other others just a test I had lying around and it was the same with a result with all of them

Okay so it definitely isn't ammo then.

Have you tried unscrewing the barrel nut just a smidge and the set screw and make sure the barrel is seated far enough back into the receiver? I've seen that fix it at my local range.

Is the hammer also actually hitting it? Did you check the casings?

I did check all the casings and to me they all look like pretty solid hits not your typical light primer strikes like heavier than normal, but still not setting them off

Mine was like that for a while. They have a long painful break in period. Mine was jamming and light striking for the first like 300 rounds. I tried removing the left extractor, and cleaned it a bunch, and nothing really helped aside from just running it. Now it works great.

luckily it’s not jamming as well it’s just the primer strike issues. Ive put about 300 through it so far so I’ll try putting some more through it as well

Hopefully it clears up sooner than later. It was around 300 or so before mine started improving. Now it only jams once in a blue moon, if I'm mag dumping as fast as I can. No more light strikes.

I did notice it doesn’t like mag dumps for some reason

Mag dumps have been fine for me. Done a full 25 round dump with mine (has about 1300 rounds through it) and from what i remember it only jammed 1 time

Exactly what happened with mine

If it's not the ammo, try removing the left extractor. If that doesn't work, might be rma time.

Very strong chance you are running the bolt and receiver housing too dry. If you follow the YouTube cleaning videos it won’t really be apparent to you but you must make the running surfaces slick. Do avoid getting lube on front and rear of bolt, or anywhere near firing pin / inner chamber. Sides top bottom and the walls of the receiver must be made slick . If using CLP be very generous with it in these spots. Even Ruger 10/22, although they can run pretty dry, need slickness too. The finishing on the TM-22 bolt is neither polished nor DLC coated.

This is the way.

Ah, the G96, perhaps the greatest invention in the world of firearms cleaning!

Totally agree. G96 has become my favourite too

Have you tested multiple ammo types?

3

u/Sirtornado 🔫 7d ago

Yes I have about 7 different types of ammo and all had the same issue

1

u/Iw3x- 5d ago

Which ammo types?

Mine was light striking and jamming until I took the left extractor out. Even without the left extractor I've noticed I'll get a light strike when the extractor fails to grab the round properly, happens every once in a while.

I'm probably close to 1000 rounds through mine and it's only now starting to run fairly well. I think they have a long break-in period and they also like to run fairly dry, if you doused the thing in oil it's not gonna run very well for a bit until it dries up a little.

I have also heard of snipping a couple loops off the firing pin spring but that seems sketchy to me.

Just for another data point mine actually didn't like CCI ammo last time I tried it (but this was before I removed the left extractor). It runs flawlessly with Remington Thunderbolt and pretty good with Federal Auto Match.

The main consensus that I’ve gotten is removed the left extractor mine stuck in there pretty good though so I gotta figure something out

Just tap the pin out use a small punch if you’ve got one or a drill bit or Allen wrench and smack it. It only goes one way

1

u/Sirtornado 🔫 6d ago

That’s exactly what I tried. I tried tapping it out from the bottom, which is the only way it comes out and it was stuck, even after tapping it.

1

u/NoGrapefruit1213 6d ago

Hit it with your purse lol that’s strange I pulled one out of a buddies for him and it pretty much just fell out

I’ve noticed everything is really tight on this gun like the charging handle when I took the bolt out was stuck, even after I removed the screw

Its almost like its a turkish gun or somthing

3

u/NeruLight 7d ago

Okay captain rimfire lol

2

u/Lumindan 7d ago

He's not wrong. Doesn't matter if it's rimfire or not lol.

Turkish guns objectively have QC issues, there's so many documented cases at this point. The fact that you have to put literal money (a toonie) into the gun to make it work because it will slowly demolish itself otherwise is saying something.

Does that make the TM22 less fun? Possibly but that's the gamble when you're cutting corners.

People shouldn't be shocked when they need to do some odd repairs when it comes to turkish guns (or it could just be a lemon).

0

u/NeruLight 6d ago

“Demolish itself” (a little piece of rubber moves out of place then just sits there forever not harming or impeding anything while the gun continues to operate indefinitely just without a slight recoil buffering effect) lmao

u/DougMacRay617 7d ago

Found the turkish shill

u/CrumblingCanada 5d ago

Here’s what I did:

Step 1: Throw the Turkish semi in the trash
Step 2: buy a 10/22

Bam you’re good to go
