Feets / Collection / My build This Year's Whitetail rifle.

Getting trigger time in with this year's whitetail rig. Troy PAR in .308, Federal Primium topped with a 165 Grain Barnes TSX.

Anyone else using fun "scary" looking toys for hunting this year?

I will be Whitetail hunting with my 45-70 this year, first time going "tactical" lol

Actually you would be surprised, it is known that larger bore calibers that travel at slower speeds typically have less overall meat damage because they gradually dump energy rather than dump it immediately on impact like most smaller high speed calibers. They are typically great for penetration and not extreme shock and tissue damage. Of course that all depends on what the cartridge is loaded with and the type of bullet, the faster a projectile goes the more shock and tissue damage will be done. You'd likely see more damage on tissue and meat around the entrance and exit holes from a 30-06 or a 7mm mag than a 45-70 Gov.

This was my exact logic, magnum ammo does more damages to the meat by the sheer force of the temporary cavity while the slower moving 45-70 punches hard but without an absolute blast on impact, it is comparable to a 50 cal muzzle loader on the damage on a Whitetail. Also, i want to make it as quick and painless as possible for the deer, so if i can drop him almost instantly, it is a win win

I will be using Barnes 300 Grain TSX Hollow point this year, looking forward to see the results!

This year i am using a "combat weapon" for my hunting , circa 1870. .577 Snider Enfield....

Cut a portion of pic rail, drill a couple of holes and grab a chunk of steel for the inside of the handguard and fasten it to there.

I used a t97 the first year they changed the law to allow under .24 cal projectiles and I regretted it immediately. On the other end of the spectrum I used a Mosin with 204gr bullets and also regretted that lol sks and 308 have always done well though.
