Exemption that allows for training for Olympic shooting sports, they are limited to .22s.
Not an expert, but afaik you need to be actively training and competing in development clubs to even apply, it's not a "I'm going to compete sometime in the future so let me buy a pistol" kind of thing.
Hypothetically, for a friend, in Minecraft, could you have someone in the US slap a .22 conversion kit on a 9mm framed pistol, import and register it as a .22, then import the original slide and barrel later down the line?
Correct, the pistol needs to have a .22LR FRT to be imported as such. Which pretty much restricts you to models like the CZ75 Kadet, which has a FRT in 22 but is built on the same frame as the 9mm version.
You also have to notify the CFO of the change in calibre, but the law says you have 30 days to do so, and technically you can swap it back to 22 once a month to avoid that, lol.
Varies a lot in my experience, from less than a week to a couple months. But if it's something as simple as a new barrel for an existing handgun, it's usually pretty quick
No that’s what that’s I’m doing. I’d rather having something cooler than a p226 but hey it beats nothing. I guess the mk23 and samurai edge will have to wait for another lifetime
Most center fire 1911s support the marvel/nelson customs/kimber kits. It doesn't matter what conversion kit you use; just need the center fire frame, which is all that matters
So the frame would be the serialized part, correct? Which would need be a rimfire version when imported? I think that’s where people were getting caught up. Very confusing laws
Center fire frames can be imported with rimfire parts, which will make it a rimfire handgun when you import it. Once you recieved it you can swap on center fire parts
That is if you intent to modify it permanently/ for more than 30 days. If you swap calibers then put it back to 22 LR once you done shooting center fire there is nothing they could technically do about it
Permanently, maybe. Depends if the CFO let you change the registration details or not and if you left it on for more than 30 days without telling them. Bet that would be a weird one to prove in court.
But people have been TEMPORARILY using .22 conversion kits on 9mm handguns at the range since they became available with no issue, just putting the 9mm parts back on before heading home. Using a 9mm kit on a .22 is, legally speaking, no different.
If you are in Ontario/ Quebec, its super easy to get the Olympic exemption/ Trapper ATC. Its highly regulated now in BC/Alberta. Most of my Toronto friends has gotta at least half a dozen handguns now after the ban. Makes me jeolous
If you get your coach to sign that you need a center fire handgun to practice, as long as your coach is reputable, you would be able to get a center fire handgun general exemption, which allows you to purchase any centerfire handgun/frame like a glock or a CZ shadow 2
When I reached out to the SFC (last month) they told me 4-6 months of practice, training, or competing and 22lr only. I can't seem to DM you but can you tell me how you found a coach and how often you have to train etc.?

I just requested my exemption letter from the SFC this past Sunday. The person at the SFC said it may take up to 2 weeks. After that, I will finally be able to purchase my first handgun.
That is not true. One club that participates in Bullseye events is good enough. Like other people have mentioned.....any gun clubs that are a part of the OIHL (Ontario Intercounty Handgun League) would be perfectly acceptable.
Check out any of the listed clubs.....I'm sure there will be at least 1 or 2 that are open to new members.
Btw, here's the criteria for the Olympic handgun exemption. This applies Canada wide I believe. Alberta might have an easier process though.
Have an RPAL
Be a member of a gun club that takes part in an ISSF/Olympic handgun discipline
Be a member of the Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC) this is about $55 a year.
Take part in the appropriate discipline for about 4-6 months by going to practices and SFC sanctioned matches. (I have heard of people only doing like 2-3 weeks of practice and like 1 match.)
Send a request to the SFC for an exemption letter
SFC sends the exemption letter
Find the 22LR handgun that you want. Purchase it and provide the exemption letter.
exemption is only for .22. I understand that there are platforms where you can use center fire upper on the shared lower, but you said you can get center fire, not just upper?
Which federation? IPSC IDFA ETC? I’m getting a p226 22lr so I’d be able to swap upper and eventually apply for centre. I’d like more info if you have bud
