Application / Regulation advice Anyone manage to legally acquire a handgun AFTER the ban?
Anyone legally acquire a handgun after the ban by training for an International Olympic Committee programme?
Or does it entail too much money or the admission criteria is too difficult?
Apologies if its a dumb question mods but I was doing some research and it piqued my curiosity.

Not me, but a co-worker has gotten multiple from participating in multiple Olympic style shooting events.
Edit: we are in Alberta, if that helps

If you are in Ontario/ Quebec, its super easy to get the Olympic exemption/ Trapper ATC. Its highly regulated now in BC/Alberta. Most of my Toronto friends has gotta at least half a dozen handguns now after the ban. Makes me jeolous

Do you know anything about how easy it is in Manitoba?
1
u/MarkDometitaOfSurrey 1d ago
No clue man. Sorry I've never been to Manitoba yet and don't know anyone from there

I thought it was harder to get the Olympic exemption in Quebec? Am I tripping?

u/MarkDometitaOfSurrey 1d ago
Quebec/Ontario you can get Center fire exemptions easily though

Are you in ontario? What organization did you go through to get the exemption? Been trying to navigate this myself, If you can dm me I'd appreciate it

SFC (shooting fed of Canada). My friend went the trapper route and thats pretty easy too
If you go the SFC you will need a good coach to sign off your practice logs/ match logs/ exemption requests

Very interesting! I have been trying to find coaches for this in Ontario, my club does not run a large Bullseye league.
It’s not letting me send you a DM, would you mind reaching out? Thank you!

Fuck me man I’ve been working night and day to make sense of the Quebec system and I’m just about ready to apply when I finish my 2nd comp this weekend. This is great news pleas keep us posted I’d love to go the same route you did

u/thecoolernameistaken 1d ago
Hey man can I dm you for more info,
1
u/MarkDometitaOfSurrey 1d ago
Sure

u/thecoolernameistaken 23h ago
Looks like I can’t dm your account. But basically just was going to ask you which coach and other stuff I’d imagine you don’t want publicly posted. I imagine the rcmp is on here trying to tighten restrictions

I just requested my exemption letter from the SFC this past Sunday. The person at the SFC said it may take up to 2 weeks. After that, I will finally be able to purchase my first handgun.

3 comps in 2 diff clubs
1
u/22GageEnthusiast 1d ago
I dunno what you mean by this
2
u/thecoolernameistaken 1d ago
I was told the rules are you have to attend 3 comps at 2 different clubs to apply is that not the case?
4
u/TescoValueSoup 1d ago
that is not the case, no.
Join the OIHL if you're SW ontario, start posting scores and get your letter
2
u/22GageEnthusiast 13h ago
That is not true. One club that participates in Bullseye events is good enough. Like other people have mentioned.....any gun clubs that are a part of the OIHL (Ontario Intercounty Handgun League) would be perfectly acceptable.
Check out any of the listed clubs.....I'm sure there will be at least 1 or 2 that are open to new members.

Interesting. That’s what the CHC told me. Seems like nothings standardized

u/22GageEnthusiast 12h ago
wtf is the CHC?

Cornwall handgun club. They had a handful of dudes get their letters through the 2/1 rule I mentioned

SFC is canada wide.

u/thecoolernameistaken 1d ago
Except Quebec where FQTIR handles it. And the fact that waiting times depend on province

u/TheRealTwooni 1d ago
I dunno. Seems like some guys out in Abbotsford BC have all the latest handguns. 🤷♂️

There’s the heritage rough rider carbine .22 long rifle
Aztech Armory is a cool store to shop at.
That’s all I need to say about that.
2
u/MarkDometitaOfSurrey 1d ago
Yeah you can source short factory barrels and pistol grips for the rough rider
1
u/Iokua_CDN 21h ago
I won't lie, even the full stock but the little Pistol barrel on the rough rider sounds incredibly fun to me!

Btw, here's the criteria for the Olympic handgun exemption. This applies Canada wide I believe. Alberta might have an easier process though.
Have an RPAL
Be a member of a gun club that takes part in an ISSF/Olympic handgun discipline
Be a member of the Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC) this is about $55 a year.
Take part in the appropriate discipline for about 4-6 months by going to practices and SFC sanctioned matches. (I have heard of people only doing like 2-3 weeks of practice and like 1 match.)
Send a request to the SFC for an exemption letter
SFC sends the exemption letter
Find the 22LR handgun that you want. Purchase it and provide the exemption letter.
Wait for the RCMP transfer to go through.
Get handgun.

Sorry for the dumb question but how do you get a handgun to practice and participate in a match?

you get friendly with other members who have extra handguns. some clubs will even pair you with a mentor

u/conanap 1d ago
Yuh I got 2 .22s, would not be overly difficult for me to get a centre fire if I choose to compete in centre fire.
1
u/thecoolernameistaken 1d ago
How so?
0
u/conanap 1d ago
How so what?
2
1
u/thecoolernameistaken 1d ago
How are you getting centre fires if the exemption is 22 only?
2
u/conanap 1d ago
If you compete in centre fire you can get a centre fire.
1
u/thecoolernameistaken 1d ago
Which federation? IPSC IDFA ETC? I’m getting a p226 22lr so I’d be able to swap upper and eventually apply for centre. I’d like more info if you have bud

u/22GageEnthusiast 1d ago
You can get exemptions in Ontario....I know multiple people who have. I'm in the process of it rn.
1
u/Hisoka365 1h ago
I'm in Ontario and picked up 4, 22lr's this year, with another 2 coming. 1 from IRunGuns and another from an auction.
Soon I'll be looking into pistols with conversion kits and seeing what I can get.

I've seen multiple different posts of people acquiring .22 handguns after the ban. I think I even saw one where they got a 9mm conversion kit for their newly-acquired .22.
