Gun and gear reviews semiautos or bolt actions?

Post image

shooting semiautomatics at the range is like drinking beer and smoking cigarettes,

shooting long range with a proper bolt action is like like drinking scotch and smoking cigars,

lets have a debate!

Given our 5 round limit on Semi-Auto, I have fallen into the rabbit hole of precision bolt-action shooting.

the feeling u get when you hear the steal ring from a 1000 meters away is something else!

I am so incredibly envious of MDT's range...

yeah I've been there once before, it's a good place!

Where in the lower mainland?

I don't own a truck so FSR aren't going to work.

Local range only has 200 yard / 180 meters.

Join the ORA and go to Borden and shoot to 1000.

Rumor has it Sharon is trying to build a 600m one...it'll be interesting to see if the neighbors and CFO allow it. I heard Orono got blocked from building the 200m they had planned. (note everything here is second or third hand info and might be wrong).

ORA is also acting on gun owners' behalf in the current gun ban court case if this is of interest to you. Buying a membership is a good way to support them.

How often can you go there and shoot?

Borden? They run events regularly during the summer and sporadically during the fall: https://ontariorifleassociation.ca/calendar/

Where the hell you shooting 300. My range only has 20

Sharon has 300 but I don't go there because Im not a millionare. My range has 100 in Peterborough. When you say 20 I assume you are just indoors, right?

Heavily considering a Homesteader because the 5-round limit is such a bummer. Thought when I got into this that I'd love the SKS but being former army infantry I actually know what I'm missing with standard-capacity mags

ringing 100 yards with irons with the sks is very satisfying.

I'm wanting a bolt action for the vibe of just running the bolt tbh. Grew up with so many movies featuring them, they always looked cool, learned how to shoot some in my teens but haven't since.

Grown up stimming

Lol I guess I watched one too many videos because in my PAL class I worked the bolt so fast and smoothly that I surprised myself, it was like a single motion.

You can shoot semiauto while drinking scotch and smoking a cigar and get the best of both worlds

Shooting the Sauer 303 is a scotch and cigar experience IMO

1

u/charlietango-001 1d ago

I have no experience with the Sauer 303 but yeah anything Sauer is good!

Shooting a Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk 1 is like sipping Earl Grey tea while reciting Kipling and hating the Germans.

u/charlietango-001 1d ago

hahahahaha

If only .303 were more affordable

At least two of each or you're a poser.

This guy gets it.

The best part of a range day is variety. Some boltgun fun, some semi auto plinking and maybe some clays if I feel it.

So to answer your question, why not both?

1

u/charlietango-001 1d ago

nothing wrong with having both, I like them both but I just like my bolt rifle a little bit more!

You’re a noob if you don’t have a Fortner action. All three of these guns are accurate, capable of 1/2 MOA. Unfortunately, I’m not. Double-unfortunate that my Les Baer is a safe queen (for now).

any one with an Anschutz 22lr olympic rifle is a serious shooter! how ever I never owned anything 22lr but I can still hit up to a mile!

my flavours are 308 and 338LM bur I will eventually get my self a 22lr

How about long range semi autos? I can ring the gong at 600 yards every time.... 50% of the time.

1

u/charlietango-001 1d ago

yeah no doubt, there's a lot of capable platforms out there!

Sako ! Very nice

she ages like Monica Bellucci,

phenomenal rifle!

I find cycling round manually more fun and engaging, lever guns are definitely my favourite for that. Even if we could have full 30round mags, I still don’t think I’d have as much fun with a semi auto as a bolt or lever.

drinking scotch once a week is healthier than drinking beer every day!

2

u/Content_Sky_2676 1d ago

Always both. They complement each other.

1

u/charlietango-001 1d ago

definitely both fun but bolt if just a little more!

2

u/TheRealBlue68 1d ago

Depends what you use them for ?

1

u/Ov3rReadKn1ght0wl 1d ago

Definitely a member of the bolt gang. Semi is tons of fun, but precision bolt shooting at a distance is just so satisfying

1

u/under_hunter82376 21h ago

barely any semi autos are out there anymore ... the government has restricted most of em ...

1

u/charlietango-001 8h ago

unfortunately

shooting semiautomatics at the range is like drinking beer and smoking cigarettes, shooting long range with a proper bolt action is like like drinking scotch and smoking cigars

I’d say a more accurate analogy is that bolt actions are like fingering your own butthole, semis are like getting someone else to lick it for you.

1

u/charlietango-001 1d ago

jeez!

you most be a muzzle loader guy

u/SakanaToDoubutsu 1d ago

Bolt actions are essentially obsolete but they hang on because they're cheap.

7

u/cacciatore_kid 1d ago

Now THAT is a hot take. Dead wrong, but a hot take nonetheless.

-1

u/SakanaToDoubutsu 1d ago

Wrong in what regards?
