Application / Regulation advice Safe quick draw storage for pest control
I have a multi pest problem in my back yard, any suggestions on how to have a 22 ready to go as quickly as possible while still storing legally? Currently gums and ammo are stored separately locked at opposite ends of the house for safety, but I can’t get a gun loaded and get to the back door as quickly as I’d like at the moment. No bylaws in my area for minimum distance from house to discharge and no one in earshot anyway.
Bonus problem, my 22’s are all tube fed

Both ammo and firearm stored within the same locked container is an easy one.
I also agree with a mag fed option

I like the peer pressure in this group, I already want to buy a 10/22 but have been resisting, so far 2/2 comments say buy another gun 😂 loaded mag and firearm in the same cabinet would probably cut the time down enough to be fair, just trying to avoid buying more stuff

Yea simplest solution and basically as quick as can be. Just take a few seconds to unlock the case and load the magazine.

Under Canadian federal regulations, a non-restricted firearm may be temporarily stored without the normal locking requirements if you reasonably require it for the control of predators or other animals, provided the firearm is in a place where it may legally be discharged.

Exactly this. There are provisions for predator control written into the regulations for this.
Unless this is a non predator pest, in which case I’d use an air rifle under 500fps.

Growing up on a Sask cattle/grain farm there was always a firearm in the porch for exactly that reason

Just buy a magazine fed 22 . You can get them dirt cheap now . Doesn’t even have to be a 10/22 you could get a derya cadet or savage 64 for $200 if you look online

As another u/Clover_Lawn_4440 has mentioned here: there are provisions already: Under Canadian federal regulations, a non-restricted firearm may be temporarily stored without the normal locking requirements if you reasonably require it for the control of predators or other animals, provided the firearm is in a place where it may legally be discharged.
Having said that if you need a 'locking' solution due to other factors (i.e. children and/or non-pal holders in the household, minimizing LE headaches as they seldom know the storage rules); There is nothing wrong with putting it a combo lock case and having it set to just need 1 dial turned to unlock. Also, there is nothing on the books stating that 0-0-0 is not a valid combination.

I second the 10/22! The best rimfire semi out there hands down..
As for storage.. could go with one of those secret drop shelves that you need maget or RFID to open. They make alot of options too..shelves' inset wall mirrors, all sorts of furniture ect.

The old Cooey is fine just keep it trigger locked and a box of ammo in your jacket pocket beside the flashlight

Are there really people like this out there? Build a house in the woods and then label all the woodland critters as pests and sprint for the 22 like John wick every time they lay eyes on a squirrel or Magpie?

House in a cornfield, 5 raccoons pooping on my deck and eating my wife’s vegetable garden, have tried every reasonable deterrent, pest control is part of rural living. groundhogs had to go in grandpas fields, rats and coons had to go in the barn or out of the garden. Not just killing squirrels and chipmunks for fun, I’m sick of cleaning poop off my deck and not eating any vegetables from the garden. Not some city person who just moved here either as you suggest, I’ve lived here 25 years and have managed non lethal options that whole time. Unfortunately people drop coons off from the city and we have to deal with them

I shoot every coon I see there a pest and can carry rabies amongst other things also fun to shoot

City folk arnt ya? I blast coons outta the trees with my 12g if I didn’t they would eat my chickens I don’t get my eggs from Walmart

Well mines the same way it’s fully fenced and they get locked in at night but why would I even let them try? There trash pandas they need to go everytime also can carry rabies.
