INAL, anecdotal and shallow advice based on talk at the club: it's a double edged sword and purely down to the cop's knowledge and comfort with legal firearm owners.
I don't believe there is any obligation to notify, unless the stop is related to the firearms in question, and if the cop asks directly.
If the cop asks where you're going, and you say the range or home after the range, you can assume the next question.
If you proffer the information, obviously make sure you're transporting legally as you should be anyways, and be ready to demonstrate safe and legal transport.
Restricted firearms can be a bit tricky, as the range talk is always bring extra zip ties to double up as locks in case an over-zealous cop cuts your lock and leaves you in a legal predicament.
