R700 with MDT XRS rear action screw sitting low?

Hi everyone,

I have my Remington 700 SPS 308 over 10 years. Only goes to indoor range and no hunting experience. Recently got a MDT XRS and AICS 10 rounder. And planning to do long range shooting.

Here is the question, I torqued down both action screws to 65 inch pound according to MDT. However, the rear screw doesn’t seem long enough to go all the way up, and still have few threads left. As compare to the factory stock the screw is flush with the hole.

Is this normal? Thanks in advance

Yes, that can be normal. The XRS and factory stock have different geometries, so the rear action screw will not always sit flush or engage to the same depth. As long as the action is seated fully rearward in the recoil lug pocket, both screws are tightened evenly to 65 in lb, and the bolt cycles freely without binding, you should be good to go.

Yes due to differences in stock manufacturing this happens more a lot. Personally I don't think it should be an issue though.

If you are concerned about how much thread engagement there is, the way to check is to take not of how deep the screw is sitting in its current position. ie. count how many treads are "open". Take the barreled action out of the chassis, then with just the barreled action, screw the rear action screw in and stop at the same position it was installed. Take a note of where the screw 'stops' against the bottom of the action. Untread and measure how much engagement is being done and go from there.

According to MDT, both front and rear call for 1/4"-28x1" screws.
