"...a resident of the home fired a gun during the encounter. The suspects fled before officers arrived."

Soooooo, it worked, right? Fucking Canada.

No there was no danger to his life. It did not work. "Unknown suspects were attempting to steal a vehicle from the driveway of a home in the residential community." He used a gun outside his house and worse fired it to protect a car. It was not self defence which is the only possible use of a firearm and has to be proportionate force. There was no possible reason to have fired the gun.

He was 100% in the wrong in every scenario. If they were armed he tried getting into a shoot out with at least 2 gang member over a car theft outside his house when his aim is that bad? And if they were not armed which is the likely scenario he used force that was not reasonable or proportional. No such thing as warning shots. Now he will face charges, expensive lawyers, possible long jail sentences, firearms taken away, license permanently cancelled, and for what, an insured car? Was it worth it?

Confronting thieves means telling them you called the police and then retreating back inside.
