Feets / Collection / My build New Toys
Wife not home so guns go in the kitchen.
12.5" MRA Renegade Mk2 in 223 wylde with furniture upgrades, a romeo 5x and hm3x, and my brand new 24" Bergara B14 HMR in 308 with a Bushnell Match Pro ED 5-30x56.

Switching out that crap stock MRA pistol grip and buttstock for Magpul should be mandatory for renegade owners. Now it at least looks like a respectable ar15 cope gun.

I can't believe how much better it feels. Like a new gun. No wobble in the stock and I'm not pulling the trigger with the middle of my index finger anymore. Not to mention it's purdy

I've had my eye on one for some time. Almost got a CTR but couldn't stomach the stock or proprietary mags. I think the barrel on the HMR is longer too

Renegade runs good! Only issues have been with jams riding the bolt home (my fault). It rips off a loud crack when I pull the trigger. Seems accurate enough shooting bulk xtac.
I haven't shot the Bergara yet 😊 it feels much higher quality than all of my other guns.

Great to hear! I’m hoping to get a maverick in 308 and a renegade, along with some B14s; one in .308 and one in .22lr for training.
They both seem like awesome platforms

I've always wanted to try a maverick. That platform in 308 would be so fun (and expensive).
But yeah no complaints on the renegade that's for sure - I guess if I had to, taking the buffer tube off to clean it is a bit annoying.

I wonder why MRA felt obliged to attach the buffer tube to the upper? They negated the main advantage of a split receiver. Having said that, it stays surprisingly clean for a few hundred rounds. I cleaned it thoroughly for the first time the other day and it wasn't as much effort as a 10/22.

Increased durability would be one big reason. I suspect further distancing their design from the AR for FRT classification reasons would be notable as well. Could also argue that its a more accurate setup, the optic, barrel and buttstock all being solid to one another.

Bolt release is shit Bolt gets pretty stuck sometimes Accuracy isn’t good Stock trigger is awful Pistol grip sucks Stock sucks

I wanted a 19" 223 a couple of months ago (they just came back into stock in black incidentally) and all that was around was a single unit in FDE. Naturally, it got a new Magpul stock and grip in FDE. Just as well with small hands and a shoulder used to rimfire. The colour match is amazing. Love this thing.
Staying satisfied with manual actions and an SKS until the SCoC decides what is best for us. /s

And yes I love the manual action. Feels a bit more intentional (and saves my wallet). I also find the action super smooth.

LAR-15 mags are cheap and plentiful, and work well. South Korean 223 and 556 is 0.58/round by the thousand. Don't have to buy US. It's kind of like racking an M2 at first but it smooths out. One tough extraction every couple of mags. 2 MOA from a bench but I think that's on me. I'm a rimfire dweeb.
It'll still be legal in the spring.

Not that I've noticed. The pins holding the charging handle are a bit of a pain to remove. The pins holding lower to upper come out very easy.

Not having any experience with an AR form factor, I now know all about the pins and springs hiding under the pistol grip. F'n ingenious nonetheless.

I had no idea there would be a spring in the.... Grip?? WHY

You too, huh? I now have a plastic "parts capture bin" for the next time. I still need a turn on the worm screw to take a little more swing out of the lower. It's been a little bit of a process to get that right. The worm screw was actually missing when the rifle arrived. The good folks at MRA had it in the post the next day.

The lower rattling around is slightly annoying - are you saying there's a way to remove that play?

Yes. Like ARs, there's a nylon tipped worm screw that threads in under the pistol grip. It passes through the lower and abuts the upper to take the slack out. Too much and the two halves won't mate. Too little and the lower swings. I bitched about this in another renegade post about the lower swinging loose a bit and learned this. It's much improved but still needs another half turn in. Don't forget the blue Loctite.

Sigh... also, when you remove the buffer tube and recoil spring, you might find it packed in viscous pink marine grease. It's not for lubrication. It's to quiet the spring down from going "doing!" right beside your ear. I removed it all not knowing this and if it's noisy next time I'm firing it, it's gonna get repacked. BATS888 tried a "super silent" 3rd party spring and plunger set to quiet this down, to no avail.

Very cool. How does a carbon barrel perform in comparison? Seems like a crazy material to use! The fluted bolt on that model is also very nice.
Shot mine for the first time today and had a fantastic time. She's a laser beam

Oh ya there such nice rifles I love mine i find it very accurate aswell it heats up quicker but I hunt mostly and occasionally target shoot there super accurate

I just bought a Renegade last week as well, I've shot it once so far and am liking it. What stock and pistol grip did you upgrade to? Also, what mag is that?

Nice Bergara The renegades just arnt good at anything though sold mine right away bolt release is so stiff cause it binds on the lower If you rip on the charging handle fast you cut you knuckles good on it. It’s just not an ar15 at all and it is a shitty bolt action I was pumped at first but after a week I was disappointed

I agree the bolt catch is stiff. You can just pull the charging handle back though. I've never cut myself on it. I also don't like disassembly for cleaning.
It does what I want it to 🤷
That being said, the Bergara feels higher quality in every way.

Ya I get u can use the bolt but it has a bolt release it should work I’ve herd a quality aftermarket one fixes it you can see the play in the one it comes with also the trigger is the worst mil spec trigger going I changed mine to a trigger tec after one shooting trip for 1500$ it should be better imo

What triggertech would you recommend? I didn't think it was too bad til I dry fired the Bergara for the first time to compare.
Good to know on the aftermarket bolt releases. I don't mind giving it a good push, but I never had the real thing to compare to!
Agreed it should be better for the money. I picked it up before the Makasi and Carmel were announced and only just finished adding the stock and grip.

The duty trigger is pretty good for the price I had a two stage flat face in mine. I had to push my bolt release so hard it was stupid You could polish your stock trigger it will clean up a bit but god dam it was bad

Trigger tech diamond pack is the next big thing I got planned for my renegade. Those factory triggers are heavy haha.
Ive been loving mine. 12.5 inch barrel like yours. And with a 1-6x lpvo its an absolute laser to 150 yards.
Not sure what all the complaints about cleaning are, ill bore snake it each trip and then a full break down and cleaning closer to 740 - 1k rounds.
Surefire procomp also made an awesome difference.

What are you shooting out of yours? Mine hasn't been the best at grouping, but I've only tried bulk xtac

Pmc bronze 55 grain .223 is the usual go to, some od ball winchester white pack stuff which was definitely a bit less accurate but still under 2 inch at 150. And a whole variety of packs off GP.
Anything under 150 is 1 inch group or less. 200 yards is still tricky to group up for me

Mine was not even close and I shoot a lot and can get good groups maybe mine was a lemon but it didn’t like 55gr xtac

Idk man, from your other post it does sound like a lemon for sure. Mine runs smooth as butter.
I wouldn't consider my self an overly great shot and this rifle out performs me for sure.

As a manual, the Renegade stays remarkably clean. Same here... Swab it out til about 700 rounds and take a half hour to do a proper job. No biggie. Still wish they'd fastened the buffer to the lower.
