Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I heard something that IPSC was trying to get recognized like the Olympics so they could provide exemptions as they are a legitimate international sporting organization

The SCC case hearing is not related to the handgun freeze as far as I know. IPSC are on it to provide testimonial as the rifle bans pretty much destroyed that sport (along side the handgun freeze).

My read of it is, since they are challenging if OIC can be used restrict firearms that have a genuine sporting or hunting purpose. If they win, it may open a path for exemptions for rifle and handgun. That was my guess/hopium though.

The only legal exemptions for handguns right now are for Olympic shooting and ATC’s for trappers and what not. It’s law. The courts can’t do anything about that since it was voted on in parliament. The only way we’re getting handguns back for anything other than those two is a repeal of the current law. Gots to vote conservative

Agreed, I don't claim to understand all the legalese. My understanding from the conversations I've had is with a favorable SCC result. Could to be used to argue for wider exemptions for valid sporting uses. Making the argument that training for the Olympics is not the ONLY valid sporting use for firearms. That could potentially wider available exemptions. But its obviously not a slam dunk and depends heavily on how the SCC responds.
