Recurring Canadaguns Politics and Debate Thread

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, questions, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread. This thread recurs every 14 days.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun subreddit, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things.

This thread is not for general politics, there are plenty other subs that are meant for that. Off-topic threads may be removed, especially if they are leading to personal attacks, flame wars, etc.

To prevent the main sub being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about gun politics will be sent here.

We understand that politics is a touchy subject, and at times things can get heated. A reminder of the subreddit rules, when commenting, where subreddit users are expected to abide.

Keep this Canadian gun politics related and polite. Off-topic stuff, flame wars, negative generalizations against groups, personal attacks and gate-keeping will be removed. Please flag any comments to bring to the attention of mods otherwise exercise your upvoting and downvoting ability.

I have a feeling that the government wants nothing to do with buying back pistols.

You can fudge NR numbers all day long. The long gun registry was killed off over a decade ago, so trying to accurately estimate how many affected NR guns there are is impossible. Restricted guns on the other hand are known. The numbers come out every year in the firearms report.

With over a million pistols in civilian possession, the government cannot escape or fudge the numbers and would have no real choice but to budget for over a million units in a buyback which is not feasible. It would bankrupt the country.

Their goal is to slowly kill handgun possession by attrition.

Do you remember the amount of handgun registrations that were assigned during 2022 buying rush? I am sure it's at least over 10k if not more. Someone published it here but I can't remember the exact number.

I am sure Poly is well aware of how many handguns there are, but they don't want the negative optics spending more money to buy that back, and risk generate more negative feedback in the communities that might detail their gun confiscation scheme.

Yep. It was a fairly large number.

They were probably told that a handgun buyback isn’t going to happen.

Good, I am glad that Liberal slap some sense into them, lol.

I mean, I bought like 20 plus pistols in 4 months so I assume lots of people did similar thing.

Someone mention that JT was the best pistol salesman ever, which for 2022, it was technically true.

From May 23 to September 27, 2022, there were 246 058 requests to transfer the registration certificates of handguns

It would be truly impossible to implement and could be seen as unnecessary. Even NZ and AUS - both inspirations for the buyback - have suppressors and handguns which are legally accessible to some degree.

I’m sure common folk wouldn’t care, but still. Handgun prohibition would be an exponentially larger beast than the current bans - which they clearly will be unable to execute on successfully.
