I had the SPD Hush in my hand but the guy at the shop assured me 30-30 would take care of a charging black bear

My attempt to be funny is only in reference to the ammo cost. Gorgeous carbine and it’ll definitely handle a black bear. My 45-70 has a 16.5” barrel but has a big muzzle brake so it’s mild to shoot(but insanely loud).

Oh yea I caught the humor. The deciding factor for me was the 45-70 costs even more than 30-30 and the SPD Hush was another $1400... Relatively new to shooting and everyone who told me it's an expensive hobby wasn't lying

Oh yeah and it can snowball fast, too. Especially with all the aftermarket stock and handguards for these lever actions now 😈

You can get a Lee loader to hand-load your own ammo, the initial buy in costs a good chunk (primers, powder, bullets and casings) but it will significantly decrease the cost of shooting once you're set up

Burnt through $300 in ammo in an afternoon. This is before I brought out my 308 Sako

I will eventually. Our house rn doesn't have the space, we turned the basement into a suite and rent it out and the garage is full of quad, sled, ski, bike, backcountry stuff :(

Need a bigger house and some land, 5-10 year goal

I absolutely love the color! They did a great job on that rifle.

30-30 is one of the most economical rifle rounds to reload for, it is worth the investment if you want to shoot it a lot

When I get a place with some land and a shop I'll definitely get into. Small garage is already packed with all my other expensive hobbies.

I just put a big order into FOC, they had some federal on sale for $32/box.

I found I didn't need a ton of space to start reloading.. well, at least less than I expected. A small shelf and a table was enough. If you shoot a lot, or shoot a moderate amount of expensive match ammo, then it makes sense to start. Best bet is hunt the used market.

I just got a Lyman all American 8. What the hell do I mount this thing to? Build a workbench??

2

u/CanadianLanBoy Aug 16 '26

Typically you need a workbench to mount bench top tools yes

I bought a small workshop type table from princess auto (harbour freight type store in Canada) for a little over $100. But you can find guys building reloading setups in closets, so it can be done.

I pick up cheap 30-30 whenever I get a chance. I don’t even have a 30-30 yet as my preference is 308, but I will be looking for one in the next year. That’ll make short work of the 300 rounds I have in my stash.

In the same boat as you, in city and lack space but reloading is on the list of things once I can in the next few years. I’ll be loading 308, 30-30, 270 (if my buddy buys the dies and supplies) 44mag and 45-70 when I do

The colour on that thing looks cool asf Rippinfatfarts🫡

I remember deciding it was time to start reloading (rifle cartridges at least) when I couldn't find sub-$30 .303 British.

That’s a slick rifle! If you want to save costs I got a Lee reloading kit and broke even on cost with 30-30 after about 300 rounds.
