Fairly new to the sport and had a question on one of my next purchases and storage
On of my storage options is a locked 4 drawer cabinet for horizontal storage. How easy at home is it to unscrew shotgun barrels? Mossberg, 1301, also ruger 10-22
This is just one option

The 1301 barrel comes apart very easily

You don’t want to be disassembling your guns to store them - some like the 10/22 require screws and heat to remove the barrel.

You can buy a takedown gun that comes apart, but they’re more expensive and have limitations.

Also with non-restricted firearms you can just use a trigger or cable lock.

Depends, some makes are rather difficult. Also, I don't really want to have to take apart a gun to put it away at the end of a long day. You might feel different.

I live in a condo, although I own it.

I have a storeroom in the condo. I put a small gun safe in there for my pistols. Safe is screwed into the wall.

I keep the shotguns in hard cases that are locked and have trigger locks on them as well. When I leave for a weekend or something I lock the storeroom door.

I'm never going to have a large collection.

Have you thought about weight when you are considering a horizontal storage?
Riffles, shotguns and ammo weight a lot.
Drawers might sag under the weight.

Yes most of the guns are under 10 pounds spread out

The 1301 is very simple to disassemble if you don't have a barrel/magazine tube clamp. You just unscrew the magazine extension/cap and then you can pretty much pull the entire barrel and handguard assembly right off. You just need to be careful if you're using a magazine extension, since the extensions don't use the factory magazine tube cap and the magazine spring WILL come flying out.

For the 10/22, if you're concerned with storage space, then you should look at buying a 10/22 takedown. The barrel and handguard can be easily removed from the receiver and stock. There's some people who are worried about losing zero, and I do think those concerns are potentially valid. However, I also think anyone who's worried about losing zero probably shouldn't be buying a takedown.

I'd invest in a locking storage that can just fit everything vs breaking down your firearms for the sake of safe storage.

10/22s that aren't takedowns are a little finicky to take apart. The 1301 isn't terrible but it'd be a pain in arse to breakdown everything every time you come home from the range imo.
